Product Description

First time ever on DVD Digitally Restored and Re-mastered. Hylda Baker stars in this 1962 Eternal Films comedy. She plays the matriarchal mother of a working class family. She and her husband (Cyril Smith) have a bright but dull son. The Smallhopes a 'middle class' family led by Joan Sanderson (Please Sir), have an attractive daughter, but things go astray as they usually do in this situation. The film is set in the fifties with its coffee bars and earnest pop singers. Enjoy the class wars, a good slice of Britain in that era and Hylda strutting her stuff! Hylda Baker toured the theatres in the 1950s with her act that usually involved a particularly tall woman called Cythia. Hylda's most famous catchphrase was 'She Knows Y' Know'. Cynthia was usually a man in drag and was last played by Mathew Kelly. Hylda Baker would achieve further success later in her career when she starred as Nellie Pledge alongside Jimmy Jewel in the sitcom 'Nearest and Dearest' and alone (in virtually the same role) as Nellie Pickersgill in 'Not On Your Nellie' in the late 60s and early 70s.

Review

Hylda Baker, one of Britain's greatest Music Hall comediennes, at her best! --.

5 stars for Hylda... 30 Sep 2011

This is a very entertaining north country vehicle for the well know Hylda Baker and it is directed at a good pace by Montgomery Tully. The running time of 69 minutes allows for plenty of Hylda's unique comedy and character performances from Cyril Smith; Joan Sanderson and Lucy Griffiths to name just 3. The story also allows for some early 1960s pop music and storyline. Picture quality is very clear and sound good but there are a few blips in the running of the original and a possible cut in dialogue. However, it does not detract from Hylda Baker's starring role and that is why I have awarded 5 stars.

How can this company say this has been digitally restored
The picture quality is good but the film has many scratches and loads of cuts where you lose the dialogue
I have a better 16mm film print than this
Great film though

Sad so sad that the incredibly talented Ms. Baker made so few movies. But I blame the Brits for this, as they always keep their great stage talent on the stage, and who can blame them.
But this movie is more than Ms. Baker. It has a clever plot, extremely well executed, and had me laughing and laughing.
Plus, a terrific cast, with all leads giving very convincing performances, even the nuclear physicist son who thinks that kissing ...
In conclusion, it was quite impressive what a TV like budget can accomplish in talented and professional hands.
