5.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing but worth reading 13 July 2012
By gailpz
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
It's hard to know how to categorise this book. It's not a romance, it's not a drama, it's not a thriller but instead deals with a couple of weeks in the life of a family who are falling apart. The characters are well drawn and the storyline is kind of believable. I was able to guess some of the 'plot' quite early on in the story, but the last few pages were a surprise. Thinking about the book after I'd finished it, I felt it deserved more credit than I had given it whilst reading it. I've not read any of Amanda S John's work before and from what I can see on Amazon, I think this is possibly her only full-length novel, so I would hope there will be more from her.

I would definitely recommend this - it's quite a 'dark' read and it certainly gave me some food for thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous tale of a dysfunctional family 10 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book. A debut novel, this is a story about unwinding relationships, tensions and strife in a contemporary family, set in Nottingham, UK, whose participants struggle to become what they have never quite achieved in an environment of day to day barriers, obstacles and misunderstandings.
Sarah, an art teacher and Lindsey her 16 year old literary talented daughter are the two key protagonists whose growing dislike of each other's daily habits and eventually their clandestine sexual proclivities form the central theme, with an excellent first person point of view shift from one to the next by chapter, a technique I really liked, which keeps the complex flow and personal interest high for the reader. Interweaving are the subcharacters of Jenna, Lindsey's reclusive younger sister and Michael, unsavoury second husband and step-father to the two daughters, a writer who never really seems to write. Sarah's father, a widower with a past not all as simple as it seems and various waster friends of Lindsey add further complexities to their problems.
From what starts as typical teenage mother and daughter growing up tantrums, the plot cleverly evolves into a series of thoughtless incidents with increasingly dark and sinister undertones and ramifications which made me feel so frustrated and want to get hold of Sarah and Lindsey and shake some sense into them. The novel maintains an excellent pace as relationships worsen and contort leading to an unexpected revelation and conclusion worth waiting for at the end. The plot has a contemporary, well constructed realism and as I read it I could envisage the book making a good multi-part drama series on the BBC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book 9 May 2012
By KWP
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I downloaded this book hoping that it would be something different to my usual choice of fantasy or historical novel and boy was I right to do so. I have tried many new authors on Kindle before occasionally I've been very lucky and stumbled across something fantastic but more often unfortunately I've also been very disappointed - but not in this case!

This novel is wonderful, very written and beautifully constructed, it starts slowly but its worth the wait. The plot is based around a mother, her marriage(s) and her two daughters and their lives from each perspective. What snared me was the relationship between the mother (Sarah) and her daughters (Jenna & Lindsey). Their relationship is real there is no gloss or and each speaks from their perspective, each making mistakes, each driving their own path and being unable or unwilling to see another point of view or what is happening in each other's lives.

She & I is a bang up to date contemporary novel dealing with some difficult issues which will keep you guessing to the very end. The careful writing makes you care about these characters, it's a novel I picked up and read straight through, I couldn't put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars surprising 15 Oct 2012

Wow what a great book. Had me hooked from the very first sentence and I read it in one sitting because I just could not literally stop reading it. A mother and her two daughters all living their lives in turmoil none of them appreciating or even realising what the others are going through. It is a dark book, written from the perspectives of Sarah the mother, and Lindsay her daughter. It has a few grammatical mistakes ie - been and being, however not enough to detract from a wonderful story which grips you in and unfolds before your eyes. I look forward to reading more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent relationship based novel 5 July 2012
By adele
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the story of Sarah and her two teenage daughters, Lindsay and Jenna. It is told through the alternating voices of Sarah and Lindsay.

Sarah is in her second marriage which is a complete sham, not much better than her first which was violent, Sarah went from partner that violent to one that was indifferent.

There are shocks galore in this book relating to all 3 female protagonists as well as grandad, Michael(the second husband) and various love interests.

The characterisation is brilliant, every character including the minor ones has a unique personality and leap off the page as complete entities. Amanda. s. John has a direct style which works very well and the plot scurries along at quite a clip.

I read this book in one morning as I didn't want to put it down, there seem to be cliff-hangers spread throughout the book so that there is never a good point to put the book down and come back to it. This is just masterful.

I definitely want to read more by this author, as a debut novel I am extremely impressed.

Definite 5/5 stars - I loved it.
