"Old school" single from early 90s resonates 6 Feb 2010
By Paul Allaer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Do you remember the days when bands used to issue CD singles? The heydays were the 1990s when artists like Depeche Mode, Oasis and many others added interesting bonus songs on those singles, which generally sold for $3.99 or thereabouts, so what was not to like? I bought a bunch of CD singles back in the day, and recently stumbled on this one as I was looking through my CD collection. I had to play it again right away.

"She Don't Use Jelly" (4 tracks; 15 min.) was a left-field surprise hit single for the Flaming Lips from their 1993 album "Transmissions from the Satellite Heart", I admit back in those days I had never heard of the band, and bought the single for the heck of it. I was not disappointed. After the actual hit song, 3 additional tracks follow: first up is "Translucent Egg", which is an instrumental version of "She Don't Use Jelly". Next is the 6+ min. "Turn It On (Bluegrass Version"), a different version from what you find on the "Transmissions" album, with a delirious 2 min. electro-outing, nothing bluegrass about that! "Plastic Jesus (Porch Version)" is another song from the "Transmissions" album, just Wayne and acoustic guitar.

In all, I find this to be a delightful single, and cannot believe it's been 16+ years since that single came out. I have seen the Flaming Lips evolve from an obscure band in the early 90s to a festival headliner in the 2000s, and good for them. Meanwhile I lament the lost art of the CD single, of which "She Don't Use Jelly" is a great example.

GREAT SONG! 5 Mar 2003

A great song with some cool b-sides. Translucent Egg is pretty cool. Its Jelly with cool guitar sounds instead of lyrics. The blue-grass version of Turn It On was great. The Lips are joined by members of the Butthole Surfers for this take on a already good song. My fave is the simplified version of Plastic Jesus. Just Wayne and an acoustic guitar. A very cool single. NOW BUY IT!
