Shawn Colvin singing live; why listen to her any other way?, 18 Nov 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Shawn Colvin Live 88 (Audio CD)
There are some artists where hearing them sing their songs with just a guitar is not just a treat, it is the preferred mode of listening. My contention would be that Shawn Colvin is just such a singer. All you have to do to acknowledge the point is to listen to the first two tracks on his album, "Diamond in the Rough" and "Shotgun Down The Avalanche," and compare the "Live '88" versions with the originals on "Steady On." That should prove the case. This album contains a nice mix of songs written by Colvin along, as well as with her songwriting partner and producer, John Leventhal. My only complaint, albiet a minor one, is that there is only one cover song, Paul Simon's "Kathy's Song." Fortunately, Colvin has an album of cover songs.
Even with the publicity of her Grammy award-winning "Sunny Came Home" and her touring with the first summer of Lilith Fair, Shawn Colvin remains more of a cult figure in terms of both her reputation and the affection of her audience for her work. She is one of those artists that you can get people hooked on quite easily. "Live '88" is not the first Shawn Colvin album you would want to listen to, but it will become one of your favorites.

Shawn Colvin Raw and Pure,, 9 Sep 2001

This Cd is a very pure simple and raw recording of her music. A very early look at her music which just draws you in from the very first track. Just Shawn on Stage with her guitar and no one esle it's just magic. If you own Shawn colvin's other CD's this is a must buy , as it takes her songs and strips them down how they were written. If you haven't had the opportunity to she Shawn play live than this CD will bring her magical performances to you home , How can she produce such an atmoshpere on her own ? answer with that voice and songs which everyone can relate too. This is pure simple magic.

Quite simply the best live album in it's genre. Outstanding, 29 May 2002

Shawn colvin started this album as she meant to go on. Each track is as good as the last and demonstrates the talent in her vocals and guitar style. She sings with passion and clarity and even after repeated listenings there is yet more that the listener can draw from the songs. Stranded and Ricochet In Time are probably the most oustanding tracks on the album, hot footed by Shotgun Down The Avalanche and Shawn's sensitive cover of Kathy's Song. Since purchasing Live '88 almost six years ago it has been the album to beat. Check out Cover Girl if you like this one.
