Product Description

The fourth and final book in The Circle Opens quartet. Tris finds Tharios oppressive and disturbing. The townsfolk are obsessed with protocol - to the extent that they have an entire underclass who seem to be invisible, never seen, never spoken of. When a series of brutal murders disturb the fragile peace of the city, she is shocked by the city-fathers' attitude - surely they need to do more than tidy these crimes away? Her only help is Keth, a reluctant mage-student who shares her lightning-magic after being near-paralysed by a lightning strike. His skill at glassblowing has been all but destroyed and he bitterly resents this magic he cannot understand or control. But when one of his dearest friends is murdered, he and Tris realize that his power may the one thing that can entrap the killer...

Tamora Pierce has once again provided an enthralling read with Shatterglass, the fourth book in her "The Circle Opens" quartet. From the moment you start until you close the cover she keeps you wondering what happens next.

In this book we get to see how Tris is growing up, how she deals with the obstacles that she encounters and how she is learning to keep her own temper and emotions in check. This book illustrates well the difficulties that Tris encounters being a child mage in a world which is used to mages being adults and it shows how Tris manages to overcome this prejudice and make people accept her on her own terms, even taking on an adult, Kethlun, as her student while trying to expand her own magical skills by learning how to scry the wind and at the same time trying to catch a murderer and be a surrogate mother to the newly orphaned four year old girl, Glaki.

In this book we also see the relationship between Tris and her teacher Niko and see his pride in her developing skills and how he is always ready to help her but at the same time lets her stand on her own two feet.

This book is a brilliant read on it's own and it complements the other books in the quartet well. I eagerly await the next offering from this talented author.

Read previous 3 books in this quartet as soon as they fell in my hands and they were brilliant, was looking forward to this one the most as Tris is a favourite character. Have to say I was definately not disappointed. Like the last 3 this book jumps you straight in to the story as if you never left. The character development is portrayed well, it is nice to see them passing on what they have learned and Tris does this in her own unique way with her new student Keth. Familiar characters are also in place, Niko and Little Bear both feature. Would recommend to T.Pierce lovers and fantasy readers. Great book. Also opens window for possible stories about the students of the original four.

The other reviews have already told you the story, mine is not about the story, its about the magic Tamora Pierce weaves. I read the very first book, The magic in the weaving just because I liked the cover and the believable description of the characters, especially Tris. I've been fascinated with the series since, and I am now 28, and am proud to still read these wonderful novels which have the fantasy of magic, the adventure, the challenge of teaching, the detective mystery, and the fact that these mages are still children and are still learning themselves. I await the next instalment of the Circle series with the enthuasium of Tris, Sandry, Briar and Daja themselves.

I also hope that the entire series gets released on the Kindle so I don't have to decide what I will leave behind.
