Product Description

Brentan Montgomery, Earl of Charfield has one love - his stable of Arabian horses. When he is offered breeding rights to the Marquess of Fellingsdown’s prize Arabian, El Solidar, if for two weeks he acts as companion to Fellingsdown’s sister, he doesn’t care if the reclusive Lady Elyssa has three chins and a dozen hairy moles, the prize at the end is worth anything he has to endure. But when he meets the elusive Lady Elyssa Prescott, all thoughts of gaining a prize Arabian colt disappear. He realizes he’s met the woman of his dreams - if only he can keep her from discovering the deceit that brought them together and convince her that her imperfections don’t matter to him.

Lady Elyssa Prescott knows what it’s like to be ridiculed and shunned. Until she discovers the man with whom she’s fallen in love was ‘hired’ to offer her everything she’s always dreamed of having.

The cruel reality of a love built on deceit shatters both their dreams and threatens to destroy their lives forever.

Love is not perfect 6 Aug 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
My summary of the book - Brent is persuaded to go the house party by his love of Arabian horses and if he spends two weeks being companion to Fellingsdown's sister he will receive an offspring of the Fellingdown's prize Arabian horses. When he meets the sister he soon changes his mind and doesn't care about the bargain he reached with her brother. He shows Elyssa that she can do more than she thought and changes her life. But it is all threatened by the reason why he came to the house party in the first place.

Thoughts on the characters - Elyssa hasn't had it easy ever since her accident causing her disfigurement but she has managed to create a life for herself but when Brent comes into her life he manages to make her question her life. She knows her limits but Brent manages to push her to do stuff she never done before. She becomes confused about her feelings and why he is paying her attention as surely she can't be the perfect woman he deserves. When she finds out the reason why he was there it hurts her deeply.
Brent never thought he would find his one but when he agrees to Fellingsdown's plan he can't believe that the one turns out to be his sister. He doesn't let her problem get to him and he takes it upon himself to show her that she can do more things than she thought. When he spends more time with her and realises his feelings for her he decides to change his mind on the bargain and actually court her properly. After she finds out the truth he tries desperately to convince her that he really loves her and want her in his life but faces a big challenge of convincing her and her family.

Overall thoughts - Lovely story of a man falling in love with a woman that is perfect but perfect for him. There is also another story that happens in the background that involves Elyssa's brother and his past which draws into the dramatic part of the story and this adds to the story and makes it more mysterious and interesting.

On the strength of the 5* review and the unusual premise of a disabled heroine, I purchased this book without reading the sample first. Unfortunately, it didn't really deliver for me.

The Earl of Charfield is hired to distract Lady Elly from her pen-pal lover. He sees her riding and is entranced. It isn't giving much away to say that Elly can't walk, and this along with the issue of Charfield being hired to accompany Elly should be the major tension of the book.

However, the author seems to get distracted, and suddenly the whole family are getting married - all four of Elly's brothers have underdeveloped love interests. The romance between Elly's brother Harrison and her friend Cassie is slightly better developed than the other 3 brothers. Harrison and Cassie are old flames. But this feels very half baked and ends up rather rushed - straight from misunderstanding and hating each other to 'oh no, it's too late, I won't tell him about what happened' to getting together, with no real forgiveness or rational conversation in the middle.

About half the way through, the whole thing changes from being kind've okay but underdeveloped, to not well written action. There's a scooby doo style villain, who appears out of the blue and shoots Harrison in the middle of a croquet match. Yes - really - and none of the characters seem to find that particularly odd. There follows a quite cartoonish adventure.

Though the romance between Elly and Charfield is okay for the most part, it didn't inspire me. I don't really understand why Charfield fell in love with Elly and I'd've liked to see them bond over their Arabian horses to see why they like and understand each other. The love scene (singular) is rather tepid and euphemistic.

All that said, there are a lot of likable characters in this book. Elly's sisters are great fun and I might try their books (they're already married). The supporting cast were actually pretty good, so it's rather a pity that they all got married off in one sweep. (Seriously, 5 marriages in one go...)

I won't be keeping or re-reading this book, and bits of it really annoyed me. So I can't help but give it 2 stars.

Love hurts! 25 April 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Laura Landon is new to me but I thought the book description interesting. Loved it. When Brent Montgomery, the earl of Charfield, is offered breeding rights to an Arabian Stallion for paying attention to his school friend's sister Elyssa Prescott. He is sure he can put up with her for the two weeks of her Marquess brother's house party.

Elyssa's four brothers and two sisters are painfully protective of Elyssa. After a childhood accident she is loathe to mix in public as she hates people staring.

However, Brent has a reputation as a rake and on his way to the houseparty he is fascinated to meet a beautiful girl who is recklessly riding a huge Arabian Stallion. Thinking to save her he rides towards her only to realise she is an exceptional rider and in no danger at all. Unfortunately he has obligations to fulfill and they part ways.

He can't believe his luck when he finds out that not only is the girl at the party but she is the sister he has been asked to pay attention to...

As if their situation isn't intriguing enough, her brother, the Marquess, finds that the girl he loved, and who had married another Marquess breaking his heart forever has also been invited to the party. Harrison would very much like to have Cassandra thrown out, but his honour prevents this and he must make the best of things.

But love hurts. Harrison has no idea of the evil plot that forced Cassandra into marriage with the Marquess of Lathamton and is still angry with her. Cassandra can't understand why Harrison didn't come and rescue her and is angry with him.

Brent and Elyssa are falling more and more in love until she hears her brother Harrison admit to their father that he had hired Brent to pay attention to her for the breeding rights of his prize stallion. Her heart is totally broken and she refuses to see him again. The reputation he has as a rake makes things even worse.....

I've already downloaded another two of her books. I hope they are as good.
