Product Description

Growing up during the chaos of the Nabosian War, Faela Durante and her entire generation never knew what it meant to live in a time of peace. Though the war ended years ago, the devastation has not. Every decision, no matter how seemingly insignificant, has a consequence and some consequences can never be predicted. But some are foretold.

Less than a year ago, Faela, the first Tereskan mind healer in generations, disappeared from her family home in Finalaran scared and pregnant. Hunted and living as an outcast, Faela searches for a legend that might be her only hope of gaining atonement and returning to her son. When her journey collides with two strangers and a prophecy, she must choose between trusting those around her or accomplishing her mission. Haunted by her past, the consequences of Faela's choices will endanger more than her own fate.

By S. Horrigan TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
What lies between black and white, between good and evil?, between love and hate, between truth and lies - That is the story of this book.

Set on a world where technology has not progressed past the steam train and where horses are the most common form of transport, this world has the feel of the wild west - with one major difference. The world is full of magic.

Once there was the only black magic and white magic, but the "shattering" changed this. White magic was split, like light by a prism into its component colours and the world was plunged into war.

The way the story is told is amazing! I am very grateful for the reviewers who said that you have to stick with it.. and I will echo that.

The story is made up of several sub-stories, each one winding its way along the pages like a small stream.

"Information is not understanding" says one character, and this is the second theme of the book. "You can be given information, but you cannot be given understanding" he continues.

You are rarely if ever told anything clearly - you have to work it out for yourself. How magic works? Why are they riding horses when they can teleport? These and many other questions are answered by examples rather than by you being told.

Slowly something in one thread of the narrative makes events in another thread make sense, and that then clarifies something else.. and the story builds and the streams join until you have a story that has you saying "Just one more page".. "I'll stop at the next page break".. "I'll stop when I reach the next chapter".

I honestly can't remember ever reading a book like this!

There are a few problems though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read 10 Dec 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you enjoyed the Trudi Canavan Black Magician trilogy you will like this. It is a more grown up version and as it is free to download on Kindle it is well worth giving it a go. Eagerly awaiting the next installment and am more than happy to pay for this one. Just a word of warning this story does not end in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Already Hooked... 7 Dec 2010
By Betamax
Format:Kindle Edition
I admit I am a Sci Fi/ Fantasy fan and as such am willing to overlook the more improbable aspects of this genre but this is a great read for all no matter where you feel your reading allegiances lie.

I'm half way in and am already hooked - so much so I even tried searching to see if this is the only one of a series *fingers crossed*. Characters are well crafted and the writing style fast paced. As a reader you are drip fed just enough information to begin piecing together a whole fully formed world - I'm already concerned that at some point the book will end...

Yes it's free and does need to be copy edited (not that there are many errors - I've found worse with established authors) but please don't think you will receive an inferior product!

Give it a go - you'll be hooked within the first 20 pages!

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing Read - Great Story 27 Jan 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have just finished the book and I feel excited. The ending caught me by surprise and left me smiling contentedly and most definitely wanting more. I love the way the author did not explain everything up front and the confusion it created. It felt like I was an observer dropped into a strange world without a guide where only time can fill in the blanks. Everything is explained but at the right time allowing for many 'Ah!' moments. This was refreshing as the author manages to not let you miss anything. Just as you think you're losing the plot, everything pulls together - superb! I didn't particularly love any of the characters, except maybe Wes, but I feel I'm still getting to know them and it seems like they're still finding themselves. I'm looking forward to knowing them better and seeing who I feel most drawn to. As other reviewers have said, there were quite a few grammatical errors but this did not detract from the story so I won't be requesting a refund. I thought I was bored of fantasy but I'm really looking forward to the next installment...

4.0 out of 5 stars brilliant book! 21 Jan 2011
By A Customer
Format:Kindle Edition
Like some others I picked this because it was free. Although I found it hard going at first, as I'm not really a sci/fantasy fan, the pace really picked up half way through and I must know what happens next. I love this so much that I felt compelled to write my first ever book review!

I downloaded this book a) because it was free and b) because the premise was refreshingly different from most fantasy that I have read. Being a school librarian, that is quite a few titles.
The ideas of magic being controlled through colour and ability, the interplay of characters which is as easy going as a soap but honorable and not smut filled has been a real breath of fresh air.
I was confused a little by the setting incuding trains, would definately put this as a horse and cart era - but the story telling, the complexity of the plot and the excellent characterisation has really put this into my must read category!
A smidge like Maria V Snyder which is a good thing but feels more in depth.
This book has got me wishing for a sequel and soon.
Will be buying a hard copy for the school LRC when we are back at work.

My first kindle download. It was free and I was testing the system. It is actually a good book with a sort of fantasy feel suitable for adults and younger people.

I wouldn't say it's the best writing in the world stylistically, but it is so compelling that I've stayed up late to read it on a few nights.
