Based on the novels by Bernard Cornwell, Sharpe (1993-7) ran to 14 full-length television films that follow the adventures of the titular soldier through the later years of the Napoleonic Wars. The programmes are an outstanding achievement for the small screen, dominated by Sean Bean's central performance as the heroic, troubled outsider who turns out to be a resourceful and loyal leader. Bolstered by a strong supporting cast, particularly Daragh O'Malley as Harper and (in later episodes) Abigail Cruttenden as Jane, Sharpe is often visually striking, the action tense and gripping. Consistency is maintained by all 14 episodes being directed by Tom Clegg.

On the DVD: Sharpe on DVD contains a photo gallery and several screens of background text. The sound is full-bodied stereo while the very "sharp" picture has been transferred slightly letterboxed at 14:9. Though looking much better than the original TV transmissions the occasionally cropped framing makes it apparent the films were shot in 16:9 widescreen, so it is regrettable they have not been transferred to DVD in that format. At long last it has been decided to release the Sharpe series of television films on DVD. This DVD set of two discs is the first release of monthly installments starting April/May that will see all of the fourteen movies on DVD, in seven sets.

The early movies are, in my opinion, the best installments of the literary conversions. All of the characters are well portrayed by Sean Bean, Brian Cox et al. and Bean, especially, suits his role perfectly. Bean's gritty portrayal of a common Napoleanic era soldier raised from the ranks following his spur-of-the-moment rescue of Wellington from French cavalry, introduces us to a mostly historically accurate, and yet also highly entertaining drama of the time.

Much of the pomp and ceremony, and arrogance associated with the English upper class and familiar to other famous costume dramas of the same period, mix well with the hard realities of a Europe at war with fighting being done mostly by rebels and the lower classes.

Even the fictional storylines are well merged into historic events. With both the environments, and wonderful folk-music produced by John Tams (Hagman in Sharpe's team of chosen-men) it is hard to stop the mind being pulled back to this major upheaval in European conflict.

My only concern over the release of the these DVD's is the potential lack of 'Extra' material. Being 'only' television movies, not as many documentaries and interviews are available. There are only a few extras on this release, notably a pictures section, a few interviews with cast/crew and a documentary on the making of Sharpe. The fact that the documentary was actually made some years after the movies on this DVD, involving filming on the set of Sharpe's Mission, may be an indicator that the Extra's have had to be spread thinly over the seven releases.

Despite this, the DVD set is an excellent buy. We have come to expect higher prices for DVD's but the release of two films and a few extras at a far cheaper equivalent cost to the two separate VHS tapes that we have seen previously make this an excellent buy for past and new fan alike.

I had not read any of Sharpe's books before watching the series. However, I love British TV drama and novel adaptations, and I love the period in which Sharpe's adventures are set, so after reading the reviews in Amazon.co.uk, I decided to give it a try. And now I'm hopelessly hooked! All the actors' performances are wonderful, but Sean Bean's is simply stunning. The story is very respectful to the people who lived in Spain in those times, both those who were for and against the French (I'm Spanish. I know), and it is even respectful to the French enemy. The plot is a mixture of adventure and spy story, with quite a bit of criticism of the British class system thrown in.This is as good as a historical novel can be (and I've read quite a few)especially because of the feeling you get that the characters belong to the period in the way they think and the way they act. In fact, it would answer the question What were all those handsome officers from Jane Austen's novels doing when they were not dancing with her heroines?. This is the other side of the same story, without contradicting it. The hero,Sharpe, belongs to the "dregs" of society, he is "scum", although he is more human and braver than the petty officers who have purchased their comissions and who are, otherwise, so elegant and so good at dancing with Austen's heorines. I am also beginning to read all the Sharpe's novels and I love them. Bravo Sharpe! Stand and Fight!

Usually I am not the type for swashbuckling movies or for war movies where blood is streaming like a river. Because our own time is full of it.
But when I saw Sean Bean as Sharpe in Sharpe's Eagle in a London Hotel TV, I was cought in excitement and thought that swashbuckling costume movies aren't so bad. But Sharpe is the only one which is truly the best. The combination of these individual chosen-men and their personality makes the movie so excellent and we have the feeling that all of these soldiers in old wars were people like you and me. There is only sympathy with these chosen-men and also Sharpe.
The fighting bloody scene when Sharpe captured the Eagle of the French is necessary like in every battle movie but I also can see the camaraderie of the 95th Riflemen and we are yelling with them for the Eagle and at the end we are eagered to see the next way of Sharpe and his chosen-men!
