Amazon.co.uk Review

Based on the novels by Bernard Cornwell, Sharpe (1993-7) ran to 14 full-length television films that follow the adventures of the titular soldier through the later years of the Napoleonic Wars. The programmes are an outstanding achievement for the small screen, dominated by Sean Bean's central performance as the heroic, troubled outsider who turns out to be a resourceful and loyal leader. Bolstered by a strong supporting cast, particularly Daragh O'Malley as Harper and (in later episodes) Abigail Cruttenden as Jane, Sharpe is often visually striking, the action tense and gripping. Consistency is maintained by all 14 episodes being directed by Tom Clegg. --Gary S Dalkin

4.0 out of 5 stars Sharpe, a fortress and a traitor, 12 Dec 2000
By A Customer
In this instalment of the series, Sharpe and his men are needed to capture a french fortress and then blow it up with the aid of the disfigured but kind hearted explosives expert Septimus Pyecroft. A pretty easy job for the dashing Richard Sharpe one would think, but there is more to this mission than meets the eye. Not only must Sharpe and his men face the french army, but they must also discover the identity of the traitor within their midst. In this episode, Sharpe must also face his own personal battle, as his mind strays from the job at hand to his new wife, who has become increasingly bored with camp life and has started taking a worrying interest in one Clarence Shellington, a poet and reporter for a London newspaper. Along with this poor Sharpe has to deal with Rifleman Harris who has been wrongly accused of murdering some gypsies who have been hanging around the British camp and thus is in serious trouble with the Provost Marshall. Ultimately it is up to Major Sharpe to complete his mission against the French and for Rifleman Harris to protect Sharpe's wife from the advances of Mr Shellington. For fans of the Sharpe series, this will all be familiar ground but for others, this is a good introduction to the series as this episode has it all, fighting, intrigue, explosions and a good healthy dose of Sean Bean.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must for all Sharpe fans, 20 Mar 2004
aslong as you like Sharpe you'll like this.As usual the storyline is a mix of the good(sharpe) versus the evil french(in this case Ducos is back). Although those who havent seen sharpe may enjoy it too, as it has a good storyline throughout. It is as excellent as usual, with its awe inspiring scenes of rural countryside, to its contrast of the well choreographed bloody war scenes. Its certainly a must for all sharpe fans!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sharpe's Mission / Sharpe's Revenge, 4 Nov 2009
Sharpe's Mission:

Sharpe's Mission is the eleventh in the series and sees Sharpe, now a Major married at the end of the Peninsula War with Wellington's army pushing up into France.

It is the usual Boy's Own stuff with adventure, betrayal, battles and Sharpe saving the day.

Sharpe's Revenge:

Sharpe's Revenge, the twelth in the series, sees the final battle of the Peninsular War at Toulouse and then peace come to Europe as Napoleon abdicates to Elba.

Following the battle, Ducos plays his final trick against Sharpe getting him accused of stealing Napoleon's treasure. This leads Sharpe to go on the run to clear his name. Meanwhile, his wife Jane leaves him along with all his money and returns to London.

As with all the other films, the story is well told though obviously on a tight budget.

Recommended for all fans of the books or series.
