5.0 out of 5 stars End of an Era, 27 May 2004
By V (Staffordshire) - See all my reviews
STARRING: Sean Bean (Goldeneye, Patriot Games & Lord of the Rings), Daragh O'Malley and Hugh Fraser (Poirot & Patriot Games).

It is 1814, the Napoleonic Wars are over, Major Richard Sharpe (Sean Bean) of the Prince of Wales' Own is no longer needed to fight. Napoleon, the "monster of Europe" is safely tucked away on the Isle of Elba, or so it seems. Sharpe in "Sharpe's Justice" is re-commissioned to command a Yorkshire Militia with the faithful Sgt. Major Harper (Daragh O'Malley) by his side. However as he returns to the place of his birth, old memories are stirred up and it seems the villains he is sent to quell are not as unlawful as they seem.
In "Sharpe's Waterloo", Sharpe returns to France to live with his wife Lucille on her farm. It appears he has got the retirement he craved until news comes of Napoleon's escape from Elba and return to France. Once again Sharpe and his band of followers re-group for one last battle to send Napoleon packing, on the battlefields of the notorious Waterloo in Belgium, under the command of the heroic British commander, the Duke of Wellington (Hugh Fraser). Two brilliant final episodes of the Central ITV Sharpe series from the mid-90s. Action-packed with fighting, patriotism, romance and upper-class snobbery, a joy to watch for the action or for the history. Superb acting by Sean Bean and Daragh O'Malley.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Conclusion of the Original Sharpe's, 8 Nov 2009
Sharpe's Justice

Sharpe's Justice is one of the more interesting episodes, not necessarily in terms of the overall storyline but because it is set after the end of the Peninsular War with Napoleon in exile all the soldiers returned to England looking to resume their lives in peace time. It shows the social struggle going on inside the class structure at that time; the beginning of the industrial revolution.

It is also an interesting episode in terms of Sharpe himself as he returns to his roots in Yorkshire and you learn about his upbringing.

Sharpe's Waterloo

Sharpe's Waterloo is the final episode of the original stories and the final one (so far at least, as the new ones in India have the books based before the Peninsular War) based on the books. It was always going to be extremely difficult to film this episode because of the scale of the battle, so it concentrates more on the personal aspects of the battle with Sharpe being posted under the Prince Of Orange (Paul Bettany) and meeting up with his old comrades. It still retains much of the feel of the battle however by carefully selecting pockets of the fighting to portray.

It serves very much as a conclusion to the series with the storylines of Jane / Rossendale and Harris / Hagman being neatly finshed.
