Based on the novels by Bernard Cornwell, Sharpe (1993-7) ran to 14 full-length television films that follow the adventures of the titular soldier through the later years of the Napoleonic Wars. The programmes are an outstanding achievement for the small screen, dominated by Sean Bean’s central performance as the heroic, troubled outsider who turns out to be a resourceful and loyal leader. Bolstered by a strong supporting cast, particularly Daragh O'Malley as Harper and (in later episodes) Abigail Cruttenden as Jane, Sharpe is often visually striking, the action tense and gripping. Consistency is maintained by all 14 episodes being directed by Tom Clegg.
On the DVD: Sharpe on DVD contains a photo gallery and several screens of background text. The sound is full-bodied stereo while the very "sharp" (pun intended) picture has been transferred slightly letterboxed at 14:9. Though looking much better than the original TV transmissions the occasionally cropped framing makes it apparent the films were shot in 16:9 widescreen, so it is regrettable they have not been transferred to DVD in that format. Format:DVD
Based on Bernard Corwell bestselling novels, 'Sharpe' the officer promoted from the ranks played by Sean Bean gives Napoleon's Army in Spain a good whipping.Great stuff if you like action/adventure with a touch of love story. Sharpe Honour/Sharpe Gold are next in the series, a bit predictable at times, but very entertaining, a must see or must have from the collection. If you are going to buy this and are new to the series, make sure that you have seen Sharpe's Rifles/Sharpe's Eagle and Sharpe's Company/Sharpe's Enemy first.

This is without a doubt the weakest episode of the normally excellent TV series. With almost no reference to the (far more superior) novel, the producers have thrown in a couple of irritating characters in the form of Wellington's sister and niece and included some Spanish partisans which fashion themselves in the style of the Aztecs.
I'm not sure how expensive it would have been for the producers to follow the storyline of the novel more closely (except for Sharpe meeting Teresa, which he does earlier in the TV series, but it would have made for a better story. That said, the episode is as always magnificantly cast, and played out, except for the aforementioned aunt and niece who are never really coinvincing. There really is no one who could play Sharpe and Harper better than Sean Bean and Daragh O' Malley, which is tribute to their skill as actors.
This is one to complete the collection only.

Format:VHS Tape
After being assigned to trade guns for deserters, Sharpe and the chosen men find a few fishy things going on up in the mountains. Rumours of Aztec gold buried deep into the cliffs and ancient ceremonies and human sacrifices to the gods lead Sharpe to team up with a french officer and Wellintons sister and niece to rescue 'Dada' and find the gold!
Brilliant episode, battles and fights as only Sharpe can do it, rescuing the damsel in distress and saving the day, fantasic viewing to watch again and again
