Don't be tempted to buy this anywhere. After one month...horrors!

Forgets to record at random.

Freezes and needs de-power to un-freeze

Intermittently spins up hard disk and steels TV av input.

Breaks up some recordings, which should be continuous, at random with pieces missing.

Avoid buying this product anywhere - loads of people are reporting similar problems all over the internet.

UPDATE: After 3 months it failed totally.

Absolutely Useless 8 Feb 2010
By T. Hunt
Unfortunately I didn't find this on Amazon until after I'd bought one elsewhere, if I'd seen it here I'd have avoided it and now I've tried it I suggest everyone else avoid it as well.

The recorder is noisy, I set the timer to record a few programmes to test it and not one was watchable. The picture and sound jump its impossible to watch recordings.

I've used it once and will be sending it back tomorrow!

OK but clunky 7 July 2011
I bought this locally last November. Since then it has performed satisfactorily and the HDMI output gives high quality images (which is why I wanted it), but it is surprisingly clumsy - clunky - for a Sharp product. I have not had some of the problems described by others although occasionally it has frozen and re-booting is the only way to cure it.

First, although it can freeze live TV, unlike other machines, it does not "trail" 30 minutes as you watch. So although you can freeze if the phone rings and then continue, you cannot review anything you are watching as you watch it - eg a news item you want to review: a goal, golf shot or whatever. This is a real disappointment. The search software is useless and extremely slow. Various functions such as timer review (to see what is due to be recording) is similarly very slow to kick in and the EPG is slow and awkward. Intuitive recording is just not there and frequently it will repeat a recording which is annoying. The HDMI wide/standard setting is unreliable.

It is noisy and tends to randomly wake up in the night and spin the HD then go back to sleep.

Overall, a poor Sharp machine. I expected better from them. I think it is poor software which lets it down. At the price above it would be a good buy, but I paid double and I was a little disappointed. There are better devices out there.
