I've had three Panasonic combination microwaves in ten years. The first lasted 5 years, the second three years (which I thought an unfortunate fluke) and my last one failed after just under two years.
I decided not to buy another Panasonic, I don't think their build quality cuts it anymore. I've also written to Panasonic customer services and received no reply.
So, after careful consideration, reading reviews and comparing technical specs, I settled on this Sharp. I've had it for over a week and put it through it's paces with a variety of dishes so proabably a good time to report back.
The Good;
1. True convection oven with circulating fan (unlike my last Panasonic which was advertised as convection but just had a grill element at top and no fan and burnt everything)
2. Heats evenly due to top and bottom heating / grill elements
3. Heats up fast, to 200C in a couple of minutes
4. Even microwave heating, passes the scrambled egg test - do you get even consistancy of cooked scrambled egg, or puffy, dry over-nuked outside and a liquid centre (using two eggs, splash of milk, whisked, couple of minutes nuking, stirred half way through) ?
5. Outside of oven gets warm to the touch when using convection, but not hot enough to harm.
6. It's much quieter than my old Panasonic in use. If on convection only, the cooling fan cycles on and off, leaving just a barely audible background hum.
7. Short cuts such as 'Melting butter' actually work.
8. Very even defrosting of fish and pastry, no cooked edges and rock hard centres
The Bad
1. The metal turntable gets *very* hot during convection pre-heating due to proximity to the bottom heating element. Baking parchment left on the turntable during pre-heating will scorch and burn. Silicon membrane is fine. If you are roasting veg, *always* use a seperate metal dish on top of the turntable, as oil on the turntable during pre-heat will smoke terribly.
I use circular non-stick baking trays which work very well.
Round Non-Stick Baking Tray2. There are lots of built in recipes for meat dishes, but not for Fish. Since I don't eat meat I don't use these functions much - but this is hardly Sharp's fault!
I'm absolutely satisfied, nay thrilled with how good this is. This performs better and more consistantly than either of the three Panasonics I've had.
I whole heartedly recommend.
