    5.0 out of 5 stars A hidden gem!, 21 Jan 2007
By G. Hewitt (London, UK) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
After weeks (or even months) of online research, searching for the best possible HDTV which offers great value for money, I have concluded my search to this FULL HD wonder. 1080p (Progressive, better than 1080i - Interlaced) is simply the best possible picture you're going to get when viewing High Definition content, so don't be fooled by other brands not offering the 1920x1080 resolution. A very quick response time means no blurring to fast moving objects. The "Tru d" function (hidden underneath the remote flap) is absolutely amazing, offering even sharper images on non HD Satellite TV. The PCO function tones down the contrast, making it softer on the eyes. Just play around with all the settings and experiment, you'll see... Currently own a 20" Aquos LCD, bought 29 months ago and never would've thought to give Aquos HDTV a try with all the other competition out there. This quality absolutely gives Sony a run for it's money! The piano black looks are stunning, the sound is quite loud on a soft setting, offering Nicam Stereo. Can't wait to hook it up to HD Satellite in three weeks! Just a quick hint: If you're not already willing to invest in a HD DVD player, buy an ordinary DVD player from Sharp (DVSV97H) with a HDMI output. This player is stupendously cheap and offers full 1080 resolution (but not HD) with an optical output to link direct to your amplifier. If viewed with a high quality HDMI cable, be in for a surprise when viewing your normal format DVD collection... (new movie content is clearer than old DVDs).

5.0 out of 5 stars Top class, and full HD too!, 12 April 2007
By C. Haynes (London, UK) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I never dive straight in and buy something as expensive as a new TV without first investigating everything out there. I had some requirements:
    - 1080p Full HD - to future-proof my purchase
    - 2 x HDMI ports - I could get a TV with one port, but then I'd need a splitter later on
    - 2 x SCART ports - I've still got a DVD player that needs SCART
    - Built-in Freeview tuner - hey, why not?
    - Good sound
    - Fast response time - Less than 8ms, preferably

The Sharp Aquos LC42XD1E fits every single one of these requirements! It is a stunning piece of engineering.

The colours are fantastic, and my bog-standard Sony DVD player from 4 years ago looks great on this TV. The quality of the picture from DVD is beautiful; the TV is upscaling the input and it is so much better than standard TV.

There's a "User" mode on the TV, along with others such as "Dynamic" and "Eco". A reviewer somewhere else said that it's very easy to mess up the picture on this TV, but I've not managed to do anything of the sort. The User mode also has an option for "Black". Switching this on makes dark colours look very dark, and it's definitely an improvement. If you get this TV, don't limit yourself to the standard view options; experiment!

The speakers are below the screen and the sound is good, but I might plug a Home Cinema system in at some point.

My Nintendo Wii looks superb on this TV and is connected via video and audio-in on the back. You can even connect a PC to it, though only via VGA rather than DVI (no DVI port on the TV). You get a cable included that allows you to connect composite sources through the PC VGA slot. It works, and because you get a TV with 1920 x 1080 resoution you can have a nice big desktop for your PC if you want.

Overall, 5 stars. I really cannot fault this TV. And the price I paid (from empiredirect - one of the "New & Used" marketplace sellers) was superb.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, 16 April 2007
By Mr. R. L. Duckworth - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
Having scoured the market for a lcd / plasma TV for over 2 years. I finally came across this one. I first saw it in a high street shop for £1800.00 but was very impressed with the picture quality especially when watching standard freeview channels.
In a direct comparison with many of the other tv's of a similar size I have found the best way to see how good they are for real use is to go to a high street shop and start changing the channels. Don't be fooled by the amazing looking HD feed to the HD TV's.
This was in my opinion one of the best at dealing with standard feed. The TV offers full HD at whereas the majority at the momemt are just HD ready.
Connectivity wise there are no problems here. 2 Standard scarts. S Video. Component and 2 HDMI slots.
Anyhow having finally got my Full HD TV plugged in and set up at home I set up my XBOX 360 to the HD settings and started to play. The definition of the graphics is fantastic. Objects on the screen jump out at you and things that are not visable on standard def are highly visible.
I have also watched a couple of DVD's and again the picture quality is excellent.
So if your looking for a new HD TV in my opinion this is the highly recommended. It's price is just right and cheaper than the nearest SONY by a long way.
