Sharp LC40LE831E 31 Dec 2011
By Xeon99
This is Sharp's latest 2011 3D 40" LED TV model for the UK/Europe which is the up-rated non 3D LC49LE830 which is well rated especially in the USA.
The 40" size is only about and inch wider each side than a 37" Panasonic LCD it replaced so it looks smart due to the slim thinner frame which has an added cosmetic gunmetal strip around.

It arrived from amazon in only 3 days after ordering at a great price boxing day price of only £460 that included a wireless dongle and one pair of 3D glasses (not bad for a 3D TV that was £800+ just four months ago). Unfortunately the 3D glasses were not in the box but amazon customer services/product support have promised to sort it out. There is the latest firmware which has a Skype function that I downloaded from Sharp's website and installed before doing anything else.

The TV itself comes with a remote control, the button positions are not as user friendly as some but is fine once you get used to it, it also allows you to record to and control other linked modern Hdmi devices or blue ray players. The EPG has a basic on-screen look but more detailed than most and can be set up to display 3 or 6 hours of program information.

The TV has menus to set up just about everything, all picture functions are fully adjustable, great for techies but maybe not so useful to those less so inclined.

Overall picture quality is great once you set it up in movie mode, the other pictue modes are not worth bothering with. There are no noticable faults or excessive bluring of motion scences. Both HD and SD look fine, the sound is particularly good as it has a rare 3x speaker system with a woofer but its still restricted a little as you would expect from the slim frame size.

Once you set up the suppied wi-fi dongle you can access NET TV similar to Philips smart sets a basic non flash browser is included, there is also a useful facilty to timeshift and freeze frame while you watch but not record to a USB memory stick (a 2gb stick was unexpectedly supplied) Overall a great 3D TV for its price!

update: 13/01/2012

Having now received the Sharp 3D glasses I can say that the experience of watching a 3D program or blue ray is very satisfying, the picture is clear and sharp with an option to convert any live station to 3D using the 2d-3d feature built in feature.
Also as an real plus you can select home network and after having installed a network server on your pc like Mezzmo you can stream all yout photos music & vidoes to view just like a media center.

Well done Sharp, it works really well!

Haven't got much experience of flat screen TVs, but am very pleased with this choice.
The spec. was what I wanted, so ticks all the boxes I needed. Good size, LED, 100 MHz, 3D, 35W speakers, internet enabled (has WiFi dongle included, and ethernet port for my in-line power connection), and plenty of HDMI ports. The HDMI cable connection has made a big difference to our DVD viewing (not quite ventured into Blu-ray yet).
The font on the Electronic Program Guide (EPG) screen, to view what programs are on what channel, is quite small, so my wife struggles without her glasses, but is fine if you have reasonable long distance eyesight.
The colours are great, and watching a DVD of Miracle on 34th Street, with all the colours of Santa's outfit, was like watching a new film.
The sound is really good too on the telly, with 35W speakers being quite rare for a TV like this, so I don't need to buy a sound bar after all. My friend was really impressed with the Watt of this telly compared to his 'expensive imitation' for a flat screen TV.
Not really seen 3D yet on the telly, but for this price I won't be complaining.
Still have faith in Sharp, and would thoroughly recommend this TV.

Big in Japan 25 Mar 2012
By Oliver! TOP 500 REVIEWER
Amazon Verified Purchase
Sharp is No1 TV brand in Japan, beating other local rivals like Sony and Panasonic, as well as Korean challengers LG and Samsung - and you would think Japanese know a thing or two about electronics.

Despite this fact Sharp is relatively un-known as TV makers in the UK and Europe. No wonder when choosing my new TV set (old CRT Sony served us well, but it was time to put it on Freecycle) I only considered LG/Samsung and was going to buy an LG 42LV550T based on specs and preview in a "real" store.

But then I accidentally saw an offer for a Sharp TV and after a lot of research on it I bought it and now totally enjoying it.
All reviews I read about it point at excellent image quality, especially for black or dark areas and I agree it is second to none. Even right out of the box image is simply stunning. But after some fine tuning it is world-class, and I struggle to see why most reviews give it 9/10 and not 10/10.

Could not wait to watch Match of the Day in HD (built-in HD freeview tuner!) and was not disappointed at all, even though my team lost! It was a joy to watch with no ghosting or artefacts or anything like you might remember from first LCD/plasma TVs when they just came up.

Had to upgrade to a blue-ray player to give this TV set a chance to show itself, and it did it in style!
300 were nearly better than cinema version, and Sucker Punch too. No matter how hard I tried I could not see anything not to like.

Sound is much better than I expected based on a TV being paper-thin. It is absolutely usable, but I will probably add Sharp sound bar when my bank account recovers ;)
Now minor set-backs.

My set came with a USB WiFi dongle but without 3D glasses (now I see they have been removed from description, they were included before).

WiFi is useless for me, as it can not keep the good connection and speeds are unusably low. Notebook at the same room get perfect connection and top speeds. Plan to use cable connection if you want to use network/internet features. Does not bother me as I only use it to watch regular TV, blue-ray and play Wii.

For fine tuning, you can use the following pre-sets, or play with your own:

Picture mode: Movie
Backlight +16 (+2, turning off Scanning Backlight means you don't need the backlight so bright)
Contrast +32
Brightness: 0
Color: 0
Tint: 0
Sharpness: 0
Color gamut range Standard (Expanded)
Color temp. Low (Mid-Low, looks far nicer than Low to my eyes, bit more vivid without killing colours)
Sub pixel control. On
Scanning backlight 200 Scan (Off, gives a video like effect on films, can be turned on for sport but the backlight level would need raised)
Gamma adjustment +1
Film mode Off
Active contrast Off
DNR Off
R Gain (LO) 0
G Gain (LO) -2
B Gain (LO) +2
R Gain (HI) +1
G Gain (HI) -8
B Gain (HI) +8
OPC Off

Hope this review helps someone!

PS. Just to add, this TV is made in Japan as well - a rare beast these days!
