Manufacturer's Description

The Sharp LC40LE821E is 4-color pixel, super-slimline LED backlit Quattron LCD TV. Saving up to 40% energy compared with traditional CCFL backlit LCD TV's, it offers a range and depth of colors previously unseen on LCD TVs, thanks to its yellow sub-pixel, which is additional to the traditional red, green and blue pixels of normal LCD TV's.The Quattron range features a super slim design incorporating an elegant, thin, metal bezel and a fully flush glass front. Its touch-sensitive control is integrated into the bottom edge, which features a subtle mirror-effect look with the Quattron 'Apex' and Sharp logos tastefully illuminated - just enough to highlight the exclusivity of these models, but without distracting from the gorgeous 1080p LED picture quality that features now even deeper blacks and more vibrant, rich and realistic colors.

I recently purchased this Quattron model and couldn't be happier. We previously had a Samsung 6 Series which already provided a fab quality picture (was full HD 1080p etc) but we decided to upgrade to an LED TV and couldn't resist the great deals that available on this model, so considered it an early Christmas present to us.
My partner was very sceptical about the new technology Sharp offers that isn't available elsewhere, but even he cannot deny the amazing picture quality the Quattron produces.
The 4th colour pixel makes a very subtle difference to the colours which has a surprisingly powerful effect on the the eye. I personally really do get the viewing experience of 'feeling like I'm there', as not only are the colours so vivid but the picture itself could not be clearer. I do think this will give the 3D models a run for their money, particuarly as it's at a lower price.

Having read the review above I was a bit nervous about the colour settings, although fortunately we did not have the same problem. I do admit I'm not overly keen on some of the pre-set modes (e.g. movies) as I think they're too dark, but that's just personal preference. The advance settings do allow you to tweak to your hearts content until you achieve the right colour for yourself.

I also think the design is stunning as it's so sleek and modern with the slimline build and flush glass front (i.e. no bezel that sticks out). It's certainly the trendiest thing in the household for the moment!

Would definitely recommend this product to my friends and family.

Yellow Pixels? 5 Sep 2010
Update 27/07/2011:
Having now lived with this TV for several months now, I thought it may be useful to put an 'old hands' review on:
- Overall I have to say it has a good picture, once you've sorted out the advanced settings (see original review).
- We do not own a blu-ray player, but do have a BIG (legal) dvd collection: there is a socket (with adapter provided) to accept scart connections, and the built in upscaler does a pretty good job (although dark scenes are a bit ropey).
- One of the features strongly pushed when we were buying this TV was the built in HD freeview receiver. Fat lot of good that's been - we don't get any HD freeview channels, so do check your likely reception before you consider this as a bonus.
- I do really regret that it isn't wi-fi/ethernet enabled: it would have been great to get the online content now available with just about every manufacturer (even allowing for our AWFUL 2MB on a good day broadband - thanks BT!).
- There are a couple of glitches in the software that only raise their heads occasionally - like the fact it stops responding to the remote, and since there are no manual switches you have to turn it off at the wall then on again, or that if there are freeview reception problems it takes AGES (10 seconds plus) to move between channels - again off at the wall fixes.
- The choice of inputs leaves a lot to be desired. With only one input available for scart (used for dvd player), and no RGB I had to spend £50 to get an HDMI adapter for our WII before we could even use it. The problem is even mentioned on the WII site mentioning this TV specifically, so obviously other manufacturers have had more sense.
Would I buy it again? No. Yes it has good points, but overall the software niggles, lack of online access and lack of inputs are damning features, that mean you have to spend a lot more money buying additional peripherals for what is a very expensive TV.
Hopefully this will give you an idea of what to expect, but my advice is think carefully about what you're going to want from it in the next year or two.

Update: 02/10/2010.
I have managed to resolve the issue with the colouring, by hunting (for quite a long time) online, and getting advanced settings. Several weeks after submitting this question to Sharp I am still waiting for a response. 0/10 to Sharp for customer service - not impressed - as I don't think watching Harry Potter without a VERY noticible yellow overcast is unreasonable.
Still, overall, very happy with the TV, and now that I have resolved the advanced settings issue MYSELF would recommend the TV but not Sharp.

Original review:

Overall I have to say very pleased with this TV. Great sound, great freeview receiver, great picture.

However, there are problems with the yellow pixels.

I'll not expand further than to include the email I've just shipped off to their tech-support. I'll let you know the reply in due course :)

"Hi
I remember as a child watching Star Trek on our old black & white TV. I remember the disappointment on seeing it on our first ever colour set, that Spock was not, in fact green.
As it turns out, had our first colour set been a Quattron I would not have been disappointed!
Overall, we're very happy with our purchase. HOWEVER, we've just watched Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and were less enamoured.
It appears that the Quattron just cannot deal with the sepia tones that are quite popular now.
The whole thing really was like a psychedelic Star Trek: in all scenes the snow was the colour of cat wee, as were the faces.
Equally, what should have been grey-scale scenes (getting the horcrux in the cave) was instead, grey and wee colour.
The final scenes, after Dumbledores death, flickered between grey scale and grey and wee coloured. Pause the video: grey-scale flicker wee overwash.
I've tried playing around with all of the colour settings, to no avail.
Now, admitedly most things are great, but this is just crazy!
Am I to look forward to all Potter and Batman films having a wee over-wash? Can I look forward to "Wee-Coloured Christmas" in December? And I haven't dared try our Laurel and Hardy DVDs yet!
Please, please can you give me any advice on how to deal with the apparently overactive yellowiser?
Many thanks for any assistance or advice you can offer.
Niki

Sharp LC40LE821E 26 Jan 2011
Having read mixed reviews on this set I decided to go ahead and I purchased this set on 27th Dec 2010.

First impressions
The first thing you notice about this set is how good it looks, sliver edged and a glass base makes this a good looker.
Ok, it looks good but how does it perform?
Out of the box settings on this set are, in my opinion, poor. All is not lost however as there is a vast amount of settings that enable you to 'tweak' the picture to your own personal preferences. If your not comfortable doing this then you should probably avoid this set. However if your willing to spend some time adjusting the settings you will be rewarded with a set that produces outstanding images. Much talk about the 4th yellow pixel, some saying it is a waste of time, others praising it. Whatever it does or does not this set can produce images that are first class. Sound via the built in speakers are more than adequate and produce a decent sound considering how slim this unit is. One setting I do like is the ability to have sound only via the tv - useful if your listening to the Radio via Sky or Freeview - when in this mode the screen is 'off'.
Whilst the dynamic mode appears at first to be way over the top, I have come to realise this setting produces excellent images when watching certain types of films - Alice In Wonderland and crouching tiger hidden dragon both look amazing and they seem to have more depth than I have seen on any other set. So dont be afraid to use this setting, animated films in particular really pop out at you with this setting.

One known problem with this set is Audio Sync - I have this every now and then but it is infrequent and I manage to overcome this on Sky as I use the optical out to my Pioneer AV Amp and ajust the delay on the Sky HD box. Sharp are issuing a Firmware update and I know someone who has Beta tested the firmware and it does correct the problem.

I have no problem in recommending this set. Let me just add that you need to let the tv settle in for at least a week and then make your adjustments.

These are the settings I am using but remember that settings are a personal thing and mine, or others, may not suit you.
