Product Description

CD Description

1994 saw the release of Out The Gap and it was quite a departure, recorded and mixed between Westland Studios in Dublin and Sparkside Studios in Brixton with the legendary Denis Bovell producing and writing some of the tracks. The production of this album was a departure not only for Sharon but also for the notion of Irish traditional music. The reggae influenced production values highlights the album as a very interesting chapter in Sharon's career. As with her first album, and what was to become the norm, a catalogue of great musicians took part in the recording of this album, which reinforced all the good things said and written about Sharon and her hugely successful debut three years earlier. Waterboy Trevor Hutchinson was here, as was sax player Richie Buckley, with future Lúnasa guitar player, Donogh Hennessy, providing his usual impeccable playing. These formed the nucleus of the studio band along with the Denis Bovell Dub band members; Paul Blake on drums, Fari on percussion, Henry Holder on keyboards and Johnny T on fiddle. As well as these international stars and players Sharon had the no less talented but much more familiar (to her) pair of Mary Shannon and Mary Custy. Tracks: Sparky / The Big Mistake / Sandy River Belle / The Mighty Sparrow / Butterflies / Thunderhead / Bungee Jumpers / Out The Gap / Maguire And Paterson / Reel Beatrice / The Duke Of York's Troope / Bjorn Again Polka.

Delightful 26 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
When I read that this was Irish folk music produced by a reggae producer, I didn't know what to expect, but the resulting blend of styles is quite unique and delightful. Fully instrumental and characteristically light hearted, Out The Gap is easy on the ear yet significantly engaging on the brain. I really like Sharon Shannon's sense of melody and humour. And crikey, when she decides to give us some technical flare she can't 'arf play that sqeezebox.

Incredible!! 18 Jan 1999
By christine_white@hotmail.com - Published on Amazon.com

This album was wonderful! Sharon Shannon has an energy that is rare to see in muscicians today. Being fortunate enough to see her play live in Ireland last summer, I was immediately "hooked." It is evident from her music that she has a lot of fun when she performs. Being an amazing accordian player, her music is upbeat and a joy to listen to. You will not be dissapointed!

I guess I get to be the bad guy 24 Feb 2000
By Kevin L. Nenstiel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
If the current Celtic music fashion has only one lasting effect, I hope it's to renew the reputation of the accordion, an instrument much maligned for its association with snoozer music from a less hip generation. Sharon Shannon serves up a steaming hot dish of not-your-daddy's-accordion music, and if it doesn't make you want to get up and dance, we might as well lay you six by six in the ground right now.

Lively and fun. 18 Mar 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I got this cd after seeing Sharon Shannon live. She and her band are terrific musicians, and this album shows them off wonderfully. Many of the tunes are upbeat ones that are lively and fun. I always have to play the cd through at least twice because I'm never ready for it to end.
