For years I have waited for a book that explores the many species of sharks found in British waters and I am delighted with this offering. Written by Richard Peirce, chairman of the Shark Trust, the book was always going to be in safe hands. Richard's warmth towards sharks, and especially those of our seas, is obvious throughout the book. He blends facts and theory with interesting and fun anecdotes including the story of the only 'real' shark attack to take place in Britain. Unlike many shark books, which are text book like in their explicit use scientific terms, this book is not too heavy on the science but rather explains the anatomy of the shark in a clear and readable format.
As well as being an engrossing read the book carries a disturbing message of the serious harm that is being done to sharks in our waters. Peirce does not just comment on this as a mere observer, he puts forward an exciting alternative future for sharks in British seas where eco-tourism, in the form of cage diving, (Peirce discusses his successful pilot schemes in this area)gives live sharks a financial value.
