Book Description

6 May 2005
The tiny hermit crab loves his new shell. He doesn't want to share it -- not with a blobby purple anenome and a tickly bristleworm. But life in the rock pool proves tougher than Crab thinks, and soon he finds he needs his new housemates in this rollicking story of sea, shells and friendship.

More About the Author

Julia Donaldson, the 2011-2013 Children's Laureate, is the outrageously talented, prize-winning author of the world's most-loved picture books including The Gruffalo and What the Ladybird Heard.

The Gruffalo, illustrated by Axel Scheffler, is now a children's classic and publishing phenomenon; celebrating 15 years in 2014, selling over 3 million copies worldwide, was voted Great Britain's favourite bedtime story on BBC Radio 2 and was adapted and broadcast as an animation on BBC 1 on Christmas Day 2009. The Gruffalo's Child and Room on the Broom are now also films, with Room on the Broom shortlisted for an Academy Award in 2014. Julia Donaldson's most recent books with Axel Scheffler include Superworm (2012), Highway Rat (2011), Tabby McTat (2010), Stick Man (2009) and Tiddler (2008).

Julia Donaldson has also published work with David Roberts, Nick Sharratt, Emily Gravett, Rebecca Cobb, and Lydia Monks. Her collaboration with Lydia Monks began in 2003, with the first collection of Princess Mirror-Belle stories. The fabulously glittery Sugarlump and the Unicorn is their sixth, and most recent, picture book collaboration. She also writes poems, plays, songs and fiction for older children and, together with her husband Malcolm, has performed her wonderful stage shows all over the world.

Book Description

The tiny hermit crab loves his brand new shell. But sharing with a blobby purple anenome and a tickly bristleworm is getting a bit cramped! Join Crab, Blob and Anenome as they part ways, and only then discover how much they need each other, in this rollicking tale of sea, shells and friendship. Now in brand new board book format, this sparkling tale, with glitter on every spread, can now be shared with even the youngest children. --This text refers to the Board book edition.

About the Author

Julia Donaldson is the UK's most successful picture book author, whose titles include the acknowledged modern classic, The Gruffalo, together with Room On The Broom, The Smartest Giant In Town and The Snail And The Whale, all illustrated by Axel Scheffler. This is her first picture book with Lydia Monks. Julia is also much in demand for her brilliant events for children at schools, libraries and literary festivals. Lydia Monks is one of the UK's most original picture book artists, whose brilliantly coloured collage images have given her a strong following. Her previous books for Macmillan include Esmerelda by Karen Wallace, and Queen Munch And Queen Nibble and The Skipping-Rope Snake, both by Carol Ann Duffy.

Format:Hardcover
A simple but effective tale of sharing with great rhythm and rhyme. There's a hermit crab, a bristle worm and an anenome that all share a shell which they then outgrow and there's a stormy patch before they share again in a beautiful new shell.
The illustrations are soft yet bright and enriched by feely glittery patches - they're prettier than the Axel Scheffer ones of the Gruffalo etc. Also, my children love to spot the next addition to the trio and the new shell etc. tiny in the pages ahead before the text reaches them.
This book has the usual Julia Donaldson flair, and the added bonus of being attractive to younger children than some of her other titles - its suitable from 18 months I'd say and my son loved to join in as soon as he could talk.
A pleasure to read over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to share over and over again. 15 July 2006
By Furzle
Format:Paperback
This is my two year old's favourite book - and he LOVES books. I actually look forward to reading with him every night, he joins in now and finishes off the lines. Julia Donaldson's rhyming narrative is fun, clever and flows beautifuuly, making it a joy to read. Lydia Monks' illlustrations are bright and beautiful with the added the bonus of glitter!!! We go on an exciting adventure with Crab, Blob and Brush every bedtime AND learn that sharing is best at the same time. Roll on 'Sharing a Shell 2: The Blob is Back!'

5.0 out of 5 stars Whelkome home 20 May 2007
By Sally
Format:Board book
Very sparkly, glittering illustrations illuminate an essentially moral story of what can happen if you take things for granted and are not prepared to share. The sea-side theme acts as a back-drop for some interesting and unusual 'characters' and are colourful in many senses. I particularly liked the sea-gulls in headscarves during a storm scene and the strangely rectangular dog tucked away in the background.

Good to read and fun to look at with some subtle plays on words which the adult reader will probably appreciate more than its intended audience!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pour ceux qui aiment la plage et la mer 8 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback

This is simply a joy to read for anyone young at heart, whether they are a toddler or a pensioner. It is a wonderful story and with beautiful illustrations, of a little crab and his friends, which is completely captivating and engaging. There is an Octopus sitting on the horizon line of the sea on the first picture that my daughter still laughs at after listening to the story too many times to count... and is still in love with ryhmes and rythmns of the language... she knows all the words... and all of the illustrations... and I love the book even more than I did when I read it first! A highly recommended read for anyone who wants to discover the joy of reading out loud to a fully engaged young person(s).
