Product Description

Product Description

SharePoint is gaining recognition as a full-fledged application server with many features and enhancements that specifically allow non-developers to create sophisticated intranet sites. However, with the 2010 release, Microsoft’s SharePoint increasingly becomes a compelling development platform. The strong application programming interface (API), its highly extensible nature, and its foundation on the underlying .NET Framework all generate “the perfect storm” to make it one of the most powerful web development platforms available.

However, with power comes complexity. The wide range of usage scenarios make it difficult for developers to grasp the full ability of this next-generation platform. This book takes an in-depth, all-encompassing approach to programming concepts, the extensibility interfaces, and how to embrace SharePoint as a toolkit full of features available to web developers.

  • Take an in-depth look into the internals of SharePoint.
  • Create sophisticated applications using SharePoint controls and databases.
  • Understand the API and use in conjunction with ASP.NET to extend SharePoint.

SharePoint is more than a portal and more than an intranet. Harness its capabilities and put it to work for you.

What you’ll learn

  • The hierarchy of SharePoint’s API
  • How to create rich, extensible, and broad SharePoint applications
  • How to use SharePoint’s internals
  • How to approach SharePoint as an open toolkit rather than a closed, intranet-only model
  • How to take advantage of SharePoint’s extensibility and customize its behavior

I've done modest development on the outdated Sharepoint 2003 and none on 2007 version. So I consider myself an almost complete new-by to Sharepoint 2010. But this book made it much much easier for me to get up to speed with Sharepoint 2010 development. It actually explains things in a very nice way and also provides all the information a developer non-versed with the platform would need. Beside just the development facts and explanations it also provides the patterns of doing things correctly as well as some hints how to do them better.

There were some things I've missed though. I'd like to see more content on Silverlight development and WCF RIA Services integration. This book focuses on Silverlight 3. There's also nothing about testability of Sharepoint applications and using MVP/MVVM/similar pattern to separate concerns. It would be nice to have those as well.

I'd recomend this book to any software developer that's been developing Asp.net web applications for years and would like to develop a serious application on Sharepoint 2010. It's rich of usable development information with very readable content even though it's a very thick/heavy book.

The best book for coding under the covers! 17 Mar 2012
By Mark McCormack - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you were wondering how SharePoint works, this is the book. It's like having your own expert developer sitting next to you! Most books get long winded and feel like they have to pad things out. This one is quick, to the point, what to look out for, what to do. Just an excellent source for the developer strapped with having to get it done!

Full of useful information 12 Jan 2011
By Mark Bell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
When developing SharePoint 2010 applications, there are many approaches to accomplish a particular task. This book does a very good job of identifying these different approaches and explaining when you should use them. I have found that most of the other SharePoint 2010 development books are very introductory, walking you through the basics of SharePoint development. Once you understand the basics, get this book for a much deeper understanding of SharePoint development.
