SharePoint is a web-based collaboration and document management platform from Microsoft. Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer (SPD) is a WYSIWYG HTML editor and web design program, which has replaced FrontPage, and is the ideal environment for working with pages on a SharePoint site.

This book is ideal for people new to SharePoint Designer who need to put together a working SharePoint site as quickly as possible. If you who want to get started, and finished, as quickly as possible, this book is for you. You won't just learn how to use SharePoint Designer; you'll see how to use it to put together a SharePoint site.

This book will introduce you to the SharePoint Designer environment, and lead you through the key features as you complete important SharePoint customization activities. Throughout the book, you will be developing an example site for a wine business, and you will see what help SharePoint Designer offers, and step through clear instructions to get things done.

The book begins by familiarizing you with the Designer environment and helping you to connect to your SharePoint site. You will then learn how to add and format content, and use SharePoint's workflow tools to collaborate with other content creators before learning how to connect to different SharePoint data sources.

You will also learn to use ASP.NET Web Parts in your SharePoint site to create calendars, graphs, integrate with Exchange Server, and add powerful search tools to your site.

2.0 out of 5 stars No more than the very basics, 9 Oct 2008

I agree with the first comment. Just recieved this book to find that its more of a "booklet" than a book, so for £20 it is a bit light. Even though it only covers the basics, it does so at a very beginner level, and offers little or no depth beyond that. That said, in fairness the book is aimed at getting started with designer, so in that sense it does wot is says on the tin.
There is a market for Mike to write a book in this style but which covers MUCH greater depth,- like exploring every facet of the much raved about "Dataviews" which is a topic that has many pitfalls - like how to sort/group/filter 'Linked' Datasources which is extremly frustrating and difficult (go ahead try it).

Overall - Not bad, but too shallow, it wont help me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and Expensive, 28 Aug 2008
This review is from: SharePoint Designer Tutorial: Working With SharePoint Websites (Paperback)
I'm relatively new to SharePoint and so far learnt all I know from the The Microsoft® SharePoint® Step by Step Kit: Microsoft Windows® SharePoint Services 3.0 Step by Step and Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer ... Microsoft Office Sharepoint Designer 2007. So I wanted to know more and saw this recently published book. Mike is an excellent author who has produced a very readable book, however he does not go far enough - no information on customized pages or page layouts and his treatment of master pages will not help you develop your own in a real SharePoint environment. If this had been the first book on the market about SharePoint Designer (SPD) then, yes I would recommend to buy it. However there is a better book for beginners - Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Designer 2007 Step by Step (BPG-step by Step). It's nearly two years since the release of SPD and I was expecting more, especially as this is so newly published. Another reason not to buy this book is the cost, for £20+ I expect more than 188 pages - very expensive - I did not get my money's worth. Mike nice try - could do better.

Call me biased but I think this is a very useful book. If you want a straightforward guide to building SharePoint sites then this is the book for you.
