Good starter book 28 April 2011
By Andrew Teasdale - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
New to workflows. Not a programmer. Been doing basic stuff with SharePoint for a few years. Just was given access to SharePoint 2010 and want to demonstrate what workflows can do.

Bought this book. It's a good fit for my experience level. Good combination of background and follow-along exercises. Got me to the point where I could quickly build simple workflows that interacted with data off multiple lists.

There's more to this book than I need right now. Will probably be referencing it as I progress.

Once you purchase the book, you may download an electronic version. Was handy as I travel and didn't want to lug the book.

Gets you close, but leaves much to be desired 20 Oct 2011
By S. Brown - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book does an OK job of introducing some of the workflow concepts and capabilities in SP2010. However, I found many of the examples to be lacking certain key steps, skipping critical parts and/or just plain wrong. This is particularly true when you get into the final section of the book about custom-coded workflows. The early SPD workflow examples are OK, but when deployed, most did not function in SP the way the author said it would. The more advanced state machine workflow just gives you some pictures and brief descriptions about how it works, but does nothing to tell you how to implement the workflow. Perhaps the author intends for the user to figure out some stuff on their own (which is a perfectly acceptable instruction technique), however there is little/no guidance for what to do when workflows don't behave as expected.

Overall, this was a frustrating read. I felt like I was learning, but kept having to overcome obstacles (some significant) to get the job done. I wouldn't recommend this back to anyone looking to learn workflow in SP2010. Of course, this is equally frustrating since (at the time of writing) there are so few resources available discussing SP2010 workflows in depth.

Great starter 16 Nov 2011
By C. Harrison - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Put simply, if you're looking for a nice, high level tour of workflows, this is a perfect book. If you're looking for something that's much more in depth and covers more advanced topics, look elsewhere.

Unfortunately for me, I was looking for the latter. :-(
