SharePoint 2010 for Dummies,
This review is from: SharePoint 2010 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computers)) (Paperback)
This book is crammed with information but I could have done with it at an easier level (real dummies). I found certain information difficult to find. Eventually reverted to going online and searching under specific words.
Once my SharePoint literacy improves and I start more complex tasks I'm sure the book will be a useful reference.

First time I've ever been disappointed by a "Dummies" book,

I had a look at a couple of SharePoint books on my Kindle. To my great frustration and annoyance, the one I liked most (SharePoint 2010 All-In-One For Dummies) is only available in Kindle format. I find that technical books like this simply don't work well on Kindle, mostly because to see screen shots properly, you need to zoom and flip the Kindle screen. Off-putting, and not at all convenient.
So, the closest thing I could find to the book I wanted was this one. What a disappointment. It isn't nearly as detailed or as in-depth, and has told me very little that I couldn't glean just by tinkering around in SharePoint myself. I wanted something that would give me a handle on the bigger picture, and Dummies books are normally good at doing that. This tome, in contrast, is not much more than an uninspiring walkthrough of the basic functions, with little exploration of the possibilities of the SharePoint platform, or the considerations that you have to make to get the most out of it. The writing is also of a surprisingly poor standard - I encountered numerous examples of ambiguity and sloppy grammar within the first 10 pages. It made me doubt that it had been proof-read at all, or subjected to any other form of quality control. After many years of being delighted with every Dummies book I've read, I've finally found one that lets the rest of them down. Badly.

Watch the readers eyes light up!,
This review is from: SharePoint 2010 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computers)) (Paperback)
I'm often asked to describe what SharePoint does. A difficult question to answer unless you know the intended audience and what benefits it may offer them. Just rattling on about features and capabilities in general doesn't sell it. So when I was recently asked this yet again and having to find the point at which the inquisitor signed up I decided to buy them this book. I was amazed, after just a few pages I saw their eyes light up, they instantly got it, could see the benefits that SharePoint could bring to their organisation and the questions completely changed to `So with SharePoint I can solve this problem we have by doing this....?'. I was getting more questions but questions, as a techie rather than a salesman, I was happier answering. Not only have they read the book, but they now have the management team at their organisation discussing SharePoint. I would like to distribute free to all potential clients but I can't quite decide what reaction the title is going to elicit. I suspect I may hand it out free at workshops to new Information Workers for SharePoint and even Office365. As for me, a qualified SharePoint 2010 professional, I have read it too. It is a good read and the sort of book I wish was available when I started out with SharePoint. 5 stars and deserving of it.
