A well researched and readable but ultimately slightly repetitive study of the Lonely Hearts genre. As a chart of the changing attitudes in society towards single people, notably female, in search of what we all desire (a life partnership in which there is mutual trust and respect), the narrative certainly works. What repeatedly comes over to the reader is a) the keenness of the participants to fall for the line being peddled in the advert, which in virtually all cases overstates the virtues of the advertiser, and b) the opportunities both for fradusters and for hoaxers.
An interesting and enjoyable read covering a subject of which I, for one, knew nothing.

This is a lovely book. Well-written, easy to read, and full of interesting, and sometimes hilarious, ancecdotes about the Lonely Hearts ad, and the people who use it, since it first appeared in the late 17th century. I laughed out loud at some of the stories of peoples search for love. I picked this book up by chance in my local library, books about romance are not usually my thing, but I am very glad I did. This book is also useful for any man who wishes to understand better female psychology and motivation when approaching the dating and matrimonial game. This book contains some very astute observations about the ongoing struggle between the genders. Highly recommended, and I shall be keeping my eyes open for any more books by Francesca Beauman.

Despite my painful title for this review, I did love the book.

Well written, sharply and thoroughly researched and presented there are very few faults to find with the text. I really enjoyed Beauman's placing of the adverts into a proper cultural context, explaining along the way the relevance the rise and fall of this type of advert in society at it's various times.

My only criticism is that as it says it covers the lonely hearts advert until 2010, I expected a little more analysis of the online world. I have absolutely no problem at all, rather I thoroughly enjoyed, her handling of the printed advert right until the end, but I felt that there was a wealth of material that lies unexplored by the book.

If this is being put into a sequel (indeed if it already exists), I will search it out and will be buying it.

A lovely book which charts the history of the "lonely hearts" adverts, and the various perils and prizes which come from them. At first I wasn't sure if the subject would be full enough to fill a whole book (especially as I bought it from a very cheap, "one price" retailer whose books are often disappointing) but there was definitely enough to flesh out the history, with examples of ads, how they have changed over time, and events helped, or hindered, by lonely hearts ads. As another reviewer says, the modern period wasn't covered in as much depth, but it is really good on the 17th - mid 20th centuries. A recommended read! :)

The book is well researched with interesting. It was interesting to find out singles ads have been around for so long.
Lots of little gems 7 Mar 2011

Slightly more academic than I was expecting, and absolutely intriguing. The changing fashions of personal ads reflects the changing fashion of love. I was intrigued by the hidden language of gay personal ads, and wish there'd been a bit more about this! On the whole, a very handy reference for social history buffs: absolutely packed with little gems.

What an interesting subject! And the author has clearly spent a lot of time researching it.

But the book is not an easy read as the author seems to get lost in the details. Could have been a better book with some editing
