The Shaolin Workout trains in the aid of building fitness, strength, endurance, stamina and flexibility whilst learning fundamental kung fu steps for the beginner, and giving those who already know how, a virtual classroom in which the Master pushes you to work out to your maximum.

Just as the kung fu is key in this work out DVD, so is the emphasis on fitness and endurance.

This is great for someone who (1) wants to get fit under the banner of wushu (kung fu) and/or (2) wants to learn or practice kung fu in a class room setting, but is unable to go to a real life class.

The Master is joined by students in the back, so you always feel you are part of a class as well as part of the process. The Master is efficient and helpful in his explanations, but for the complete beginner, do not be afraid to pause the DVD when practicing moves for the first time that you did not quite pick up firstly at the full speed of the class. Once you get the moves, working out is even the more fun.

It is an enjoyable, fast paced, accurate and more regimented form of working out.

Before buying this I heard a few bad reviews that he speaks bad english, cant see what to do, too tough to workout etc. Now that I have it and tried it i can allay some peoples fears.

First of all I did karate for 9 years until I was 16 and got 1st dan (black belt), so I do know what martial arts is like. I also spent the last 5 years watching tv and eating junk (putting on 3 stone) so I am anything but fit anymore.

The Shifu Shi Yan Lei does speak broken English (He is a Shaolin monk from China, what do you expect?!) but is perfectly understandable. Him and his class go through the exercises and moves slowly (twice!) before he starts counting out the exercises so following is not a problem, and that has nothing to do with my martial arts experiance, kung fu is totally different from karate so I am a complete beginner at this. I have heard complaints that people feel uncomfortable working at the high pace and feel inadequate working slower, as for this all I can say is to look at the class in the background, these are neither perfect at the moves nor really fast, if you cant do it at the same speed do it slowly, speed come with time. Same as If you are not flexible enough, it comes with time. The Shifu shouts and pushes to try and force you through, without this it would not be a martial art, to get anywhere in life you need to be pushed, its the only way to improve, always strive to do your best and you will improve quickly. This was almost exactly like a real martial arts class, highly intense and the instructor pushes you to your best, with this comes fitness, perfection and discipline. If you are not willing to try your best everytime you should not get this, nor any exercise dvd.

The one problem I had with this dvd is the way its filmed. It starts quite abruptly and the instructor seems to be uncomfortable infront of a camera to start with until the class gets underway.

Overall a brilliant purchase and anyone wanting to get into a martial art seriously and willing to put in the effort, will benefit greatly. If you are lazy and dont try to keep up and don't push yoursefl this is not for you.

I havent done martial arts for a few years now and am looking to get back into it, i brought this to try and see if i had anything left fitness wise....and i didnt, the first part of the dvd is stretching/warming up (press-ups etc) and i was exhausted just at that!

The dvd is broken down into 8 chapters:

1. Warm up
2. Stamina Training
3. Stance and punch training
4. Combination Training
5. Stretching
6. 5 Basic Kicks
7. Mixed Training
8. Qi Gong

Its a brilliant dvd and is definetly not a walk in the park, anyone looking to get into martial arts will benefit greatly from this and anyone in martial arts might learn something new but depending on your experience you may find this easy and would probably benefit more from the other 2 volumes.

This really is a great introduction. It's not a particularly long video but doing this two or three times a week would certainly help your fitness. Read more

Shaolin workout
This DVD is OK, it doesn't have as much as I thought, it is a bit repetitive and boring in some points, but it is OK! If you want a simple workout go for it.
