Product Description

Instructional fitness programme. Shaolin Kung Fu is an exhilarating physical and mental workout, bringing flexibility, fitness and meditation into one fully integrated discipline. The exercises in this programme are based on the ones taught to novices at the Shaolin Temple in China. This high impact workout uses all of the muscle groups and is followed by a calming down at the end with some ancient Qi Gong movements. The viewer needs no prior knowledge of martial arts and can train at their own pace alongside the other students and disciples in the programme.

The Shaolin Workout trains in the aid of building fitness, strength, endurance, stamina and flexibility whilst learning fundamental kung fu steps for the beginner, and giving those who already know how, a virtual classroom in which the Master pushes you to work out to your maximum.

Just as the kung fu is key in this work out DVD, so is the emphasis on fitness and endurance.

This is great for someone who (1) wants to get fit under the banner of wushu (kung fu) and/or (2) wants to learn or practice kung fu in a class room setting, but is unable to go to a real life class.

The Master is joined by students in the back, so you always feel you are part of a class as well as part of the process. The Master is efficient and helpful in his explanations, but for the complete beginner, do not be afraid to pause the DVD when practicing moves for the first time that you did not quite pick up firstly at the full speed of the class. Once you get the moves, working out is even the more fun.

It is an enjoyable, fast paced, accurate and more regimented form of working out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but hard, very well worth it 25 Jun 2009
By A. pike
Before buying this I heard a few bad reviews that he speaks bad english, cant see what to do, too tough to workout etc. Now that I have it and tried it i can allay some peoples fears.

First of all I did karate for 9 years until I was 16 and got 1st dan (black belt), so I do know what martial arts is like. I also spent the last 5 years watching tv and eating junk (putting on 3 stone) so I am anything but fit anymore.

The Shifu Shi Yan Lei does speak broken English (He is a Shaolin monk from China, what do you expect?!) but is perfectly understandable. Him and his class go through the exercises and moves slowly (twice!) before he starts counting out the exercises so following is not a problem, and that has nothing to do with my martial arts experiance, kung fu is totally different from karate so I am a complete beginner at this. I have heard complaints that people feel uncomfortable working at the high pace and feel inadequate working slower, as for this all I can say is to look at the class in the background, these are neither perfect at the moves nor really fast, if you cant do it at the same speed do it slowly, speed come with time. Same as If you are not flexible enough, it comes with time. The Shifu shouts and pushes to try and force you through, without this it would not be a martial art, to get anywhere in life you need to be pushed, its the only way to improve, always strive to do your best and you will improve quickly. This was almost exactly like a real martial arts class, highly intense and the instructor pushes you to your best, with this comes fitness, perfection and discipline. If you are not willing to try your best everytime you should not get this, nor any exercise dvd.

The one problem I had with this dvd is the way its filmed.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Mess, No Waste. 9 Feb 2010
Verified Purchase
At 43 years of age, I was looking for something simple in the strength and flexibility field. There's a lot of "fluff" out there and I sifted through a lot of it. I'm not a martial arts fan and am under no disillusion as to the limits of learning in this fashion (i.e. not at an academy, club etc). I have a basic target of being as fit at 50 as I was when I was 25 and that's it.
What I will say is that, for a beginner like me, it is tough but not so much as to leave you disheartened. The stamina training is a killer! There are some great movements in this DVD and the basic horse stance is a true strength-builder. Am now into my 3rd week of following this DVD and I'm now spotting differences in my ability to keep up with the action and improvements in the more taxing stances.
I tend to break the sections into individual workouts (not least because doing a whole session in one go was not even a remote possibility!). For instance, one session is warm-up through to end of punches section. Then the next session is stretching, kicks and Qi Gong. This works a treat and I'm enjoying it.
Initially, you'll wish for more time where the positions, movements are explained. This gave me a few rewind/play/rewind/play sessions to get the hang of things but persistence bears fruit. Once you get it you'll love the fact that these tutorial sections are brief so it is well thought out.
By way of testament, I'm now getting interested in kung fu generally as it seems to be an age-giving, stress-beater. Do it and you'll keep feeling good and what more can you ask?
Well worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for any martial artist! 21 May 2009
I havent done martial arts for a few years now and am looking to get back into it, i brought this to try and see if i had anything left fitness wise....and i didnt, the first part of the dvd is stretching/warming up (press-ups etc) and i was exhausted just at that!

The dvd is broken down into 8 chapters:

1. Warm up
2. Stamina Training
3. Stance and punch training
4. Combination Training
5. Stretching
6. 5 Basic Kicks
7. Mixed Training
8. Qi Gong

Its a brilliant dvd and is definetly not a walk in the park, anyone looking to get into martial arts will benefit greatly from this and anyone in martial arts might learn something new but depending on your experience you may find this easy and would probably benefit more from the other 2 volumes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Shaolin workout
This DVD is OK, it doesn't have as much as I thought, it is a bit repetitive and boring in some points, but it is OK! If you want a simple workout go for it.
