Book Description

15 Nov 2008
· Reveals the fundamental spiritual principles and includes both a short and long form of the daily exercises · Explains the benefits of mastering energy in the body, such as organ strengthening · Includes a 53-minute DVD of exercises performed by the author, a Shaolin monk The great teacher Bodhidharma is credited with the creation of Shaolin Temple qi gong and kung fu in the 6th century CE. Motivated by the terrible physical condition of the monks who spent all their time meditating or copying scrolls, his two-part system promoted physical as well as spiritual fitness and became the basis for all the martial and meditative arts taught in the Shaolin Temple. These ancient practices increase physical health and vitality, enhance creativity, and can be practised well into old age. Author Shi Xinggui, a Shaolin monk, explains the fundamental principle of qi gong - the art of mastering energy (qi) and moving it through the body - and provides clear demonstrations of all the positions and movements. In order to develop qi attentively, it is necessary to cultivate the art of slowness in both movement and breathwork. Shi Xinggui provides both a short form and a long form of the daily exercises, with lessons on heart centring, organ strengthening, and balancing the energy using the three dantians - the three energy centres of the body. A 53-minute DVD of the exercises performed by the author is also included.

Product Description

Review

"The book alone will be enough for most beginners to learn the basic moves and begin practicing them right away. A marvelous bonus, however, is the DVD that accompanies the text. . . . The music, based on the pentatonic scale, is particularly soothing, adding to the sense that there is no rush, no right or wrong, and no need to fret about perfection while practicing qi gong. . . . I've tried other books and DVD courses, in the past, but none of them has given me the natural flow of qi gong. . ."

5.0 out of 5 stars great qi gung set 6 April 2011
By john
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
as a regular practitioner of qi gung i have collected many books/dvds and this is my favourite. the book doesn't waffle on and on but gives you the basics you need and then gets on with teaching and describing the exercises and the dvd is first rate and easy to follow and contains some lovely qi gong (the same exercises as the book) its all from shaolin qi gong and although its the authers own system its can effect you in just as positive and strong a manner as older more famous systems (from which it would be mainly based) frankly i get more out of this than any other qi gung homestudy source i own.

Well worth purchasing. Well illustrated, concise and clear book with supporting CD.

If you are familiar with Qi gong there are no big surprises, but you may appreciate the well contructed routines. It will complement martial artists practice, as well as being useful to those practicing 'mindfulness' or wishing to expand on their meditation practice and similarly to yoga practitioners. However, it is really accessible and no such background, knowledge, or physical abilities are necessary and the intro notes the style has been developed with westerns needs in mind. It would be a great introduction to just about anyone who is curious about this type of activity, or looking for something to help regain balance and energy/ improve well-being. The book size (fairly small - easy to fit in the average bag) and feel (smooth, thick pages) and appearance clear type face and good quality coloured photographs are additonal positives.
