Product Description

Review
"As a adult writer, Begag's attention to linguistics persists--his original French version drew much praise for its exploration of colloquial Arabic expressions in France... [T]his book's translators strive to preserve and explain the most salient uses of such slang. An important look at Algerian ethnic identity in France, this discussion will also attract readers generally interested in immigration issues." YA/M: The cultural-identity themes will capture strong readers

Synopsis
An autobiographical novel of growing up in the multicultural environment of contemporary France tells the story of Azouz Begag, the son of an illiterate Algerian immigrant in Lyon and his coming of age in a world of ethnic and racial tensions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written with touching humour, 10 April 2007
By S. Wolf (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book tells the story of Azouz,a young boy growing up in France, torn between the Algerian culture of his parents, and the French culture of his peers, amidst the underlying racial tensions between the French and the immigrants living in Chaaba (the shantytown of the title). Begag conveys this with humour and sympathy, which has been elegantly translated by Naima Wolf. This book, now an A-Level French text, makes interesting reading for anyone interested in the search for identity amongst second generation immigrants.

Definitely worth checking out.
