Smedes delivers an incredible gift by identifying where we took on shame, what it looks and feels like, and then proceeds to dismantle it's power with the truth of grace. Especially helpful to those who know God loves them, but can't understand the darkness they struggle with and why it's so hard to love themselves.

A forceful introduction to the reality of Shame often overlooked not just in Christian Life but in Everyday Life! Secular Society, Parents and the Church are the shame creators in society. I would have wanted to leave out the latter and blame it only on Secular Society and the Family, but we are left with no option but to include the Church. And if you are one who would like to bludgeon the Christian Church, don't count this statement as a victory because even though this is a book written for the Christian community, I would not in any way hesitate to say that any and every religion or faith-system is guilty of shame creatioin - some maybe even more than Christianity. The difference for Christianity lies in the title of the book!
Therefore I would recommend this book to any reader, whether you are Christian or not. You do run the risk though of coming face to face with Grace and I would strongly suggest that you go on to read a book like 'What's so Amazing about Grace' by Yancey.
I would have liked to see a greater interaction in the book, with Grace - but it serves well in giving you a lick at the impregnated flavour of Grace that is so poised to propel you, like a snorkel diver desperate for air, into the lifegiving hope in Yancey's book.
For Parents (including single parents) this book is simply a must read. And for those who dispise their parents or siblings - I suggest that if you consider eating your next meal as being important, how about missing a few meals and first reading this book, as it is of greater importance. Shame and Grace ... yes, what a shame I had not read this book the day it came off the press ... but what Grace in having had the privelage to read it now. And for those who hate life, who knows, you may just find a few hours of sense in your journey of hate ... who knows? ... you may even find shame allowing grace to introduce you to joy. The choice is yours.
