For those who are interested in exploring shamanism and 'shamanic conciousness', this is an excellent work for the layperson. Not only does it carefully explain shamanic practice in general, and point out the difference between being a shaman and being a 'shamanic practioner' (one who uses shamanic methods in their spiritual practice), but it explains clearly how to adopt such practices in daily life.

This is an excellent guide to exploring the shamanic realms. Tom Cowan offers a rich and yet easy to understand look at how to take a shamanic journey and how to utilize what you have learned in the journey state. His clear writing provides the best overall look at shamanic practices and offers the reader safe, supportive entrance into the ways of the shaman.

An excellent, explanatory, straight forward signpost for
Shamanism as a spiritual practice for daily living. Shamanism spoke
to me from my very first 'journey' approximately fifteen years ago. I had read
very little with regards 'how to' or the why. With spirit's guidance it was
necessary for me to find my own way, step at a time.
Upon recently reading Tom Cowan's book, conformation and pieces of the jig saw
puzzle in my head have been put into place, I would have found it useful to have
had his informative book with me all those years ago.
Thank you Tom Cowan for your 'work', I recommend your book to any one who chooses shamanism
for healing their Life's 'practice.'

This is well organised and easy to read book. It is split into fairly short headed sections which allows the reader to 'dip in and out' and revisit the topics covered when a little reminder, or more understanding is required. I am a beginner myself - but think this book will be helpful later on as I become a little more 'practiced' at some of the dfferent types of journeys and concepts described.
