Product Description

Product Description

Born Michael Barrett in Cardiff, 1948, Shaky began his singing career in the late 1960s, in the rock 'n' roll band Shakin' Stevens and the Sunsets. In 1977 he decided to go it alone, and after taking the lead role in the West End musical Elvis, his recording career as a solo artist started to gain momentum. It was in 1981 that he really arrived on the pop scene, when his version of the 1950s classic "This Ole House" topped the charts. He followed it up with a string of hits including "Green Door", "You Drive Me Crazy", "Merry Christmas Everyone" and "Oh Julie". A darling of the pop world throughout the 1980s, Shaky effectively retired from the live arena in 1995, but on his return in 1999, he found his fan base intact. Now firmly back in the limelight in 2005, he was the overwhelming winner of ITV's nostalgic pop show "Hit Me Baby One More Time", thanks to his blistering performances and the votes of thousands of supporters. He also featured in Peter Kay's video for the Tony Christie hit '("Is This the Way To) Amarillo?" His recently released greatest-hits album, "The Collection", went straight into the Top 10 album chart, and he will be playing material, from the album to packed-out UK venues, throughout November and December.

2.0 out of 5 stars A "shaky" biography of music star, 8 Nov 2005
By
Mark Kellett "Farney man" (County Monaghan, Ireland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shaky: The Biography of Shakin' Stevens (Hardcover)
I bought this book with much anticipation but was ultimately very disappointed with the result. What we have here is an apparent second hand review of Shakys life. This book was not authorised by the star and therefore doesnt contain any indepth interviews with Shaky himself about his life. It doesnt contain anything new and his career is glossed over quite quickly. His rise to fame is very briskly dealt with and I felt that his demise from the public eye in the late 1980s and early 1990s got more coverage. The author has an excellent back catalogue of biographies but this was not up to scratch. Given Shakys well documented reserved character and intense wish to keep his family life private and his apparent suspicion of the media it is no surprise that this book is short on fact. The reader gets an account of Shakys life but they dont get to know Shaky as a person and that is the disappointing feature of the book. A character such as Shaky has had a great career and this book fails to give him the credit he deserves. The album/single discography at the back of the book is informative, accurate and well researched though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unauthorized but interesting..., 3 May 2007
By J. Wozniak - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Shaky: The Biography of Shakin' Stevens (Hardcover)
This is an unauthorized biography of one of Europe's best known artists (mostly in the 80's). Shakin' Stevens, whose real name is Michael Barrett, is a very private person, so having any type of biography on him available is a real treat. The book spans his life and career from its beginnings to a very recent comeback. Since the biography is unauthorized there are only limited publically available pictures of Shaky and his band, but the book is full of anegdotes and facts obtained through interviews, which helps paint a portrait of this very private man. Those who know and appreciate his music will find this book enjoyable.
