Product Description

CD Description

Backing Johnny Kidd in the early 60s, the Pirates the great Mick Green (guitar), Johnny Spence (bass, lead vocals) and Frank Farley (drums) were rock s first bona fide power trio, a major influence on the likes of The Who. Reconvening in the latter half of the 70s, their uncompromising approach and awesome chops won them a whole new generation of fans. With Mick (1944-2010) no longer with us and Frank retired, only Johnny Spence is still out there performing. Meanwhile, this chronicle of both live and studio performances affirms beyond any doubt that The Pirates now reside in the pantheon of Britain s finest rockers. Buckle up for 52 of their best (and rarest) recordings from 1977 to 1979. Features the Pirates albums Out Of their Skulls (1977), Skull Wars (1978) and Happy Birthday Rock n Roll (1979) in their entirety plus rare Pirates single A/B sides and seven previously unreleased tracks. Remastered from original session tapes for fantastic sound quality and presented in sumptuous digipack with 32-page booklet packed with wonderful photos and Pirates ephemera. Also includes authoritative sleeve notes by veteran rock scribe and band confidant Roy Carr (who even wrote a couple of the songs with Mick Green).

Product Description

2CD set of album highlights plus outtakes & incendiary live workouts, pays suitable tribute to the late Mick Green, with added annotation by veteran journalist Roy Carr. "Without The Pirates we wouldn't have had Dr Feelgood"

A Fitting Tribute 4 Oct 2011

I must admit, I was glad to see the release of this album.
A "best of the best" Pirates album is long overdue.
I was going to Gigs frequently in the late 70's early 80's but sadly I never managed to catch The Pirates.
But buying all their albums is the next best thing.
All we need now is a live DVD.
Johnny Kidd would have been proud!

Rhythm 'n' Booze 24 Sep 2011
The Pirates were one of the great seventies live bands, a rock 'n' roll 3 piece who made 2 exhilarating, raw sounding albums: Out of their Skulls; and (even better) Skull Wars. When I had vinyl the 2 records were always near the front of my collection. They've been hard to get on CD until now, but they're here in their entirety and in their original running order, together with the disappointing third album (Happy Birthday Rock 'n' Roll) and some singles and oddments. In all, it's pretty close to being a definitive collection.

I've only played the Skull Wars tracks so far, and the sound has definitely improved since the extortionately priced 'Out of their Skulls' compilation CD, less bass heavy and with more accent on the guitar (R.I.P. Mick Green). But absolute sound quality is a bit irrelevant, as the Pirates were in yer face, raucous and loud.

Pirates concerts were always crowded, though few people would have remembered too much of the shows, as everyone in the audience always seemed plastered, or maybe that was just me. But you knew you'd been to a great gig the following day. The records should be treated in the same way - they're for playing when you get back from the pub rather than as chill-out muzak. If you like pub rock, you'll love this CD.

this is an amazing collection containing 52 tracks by the re formed pirates from 1977 to 79, the bbc sessions where great when that cd was issued some years back but this one is even better!!!!!!!!!!!!!! as any pirates fan knows this was johnny kidds backing band in the early 60s before his death, mick green put the pirates back together in late 1975 and somehow they got meshed in with the 77 punk explosion but they fit live better with ducks deluxe, dr feelgood, eggs over easy, tyla gang or eddie and the hot rods a great pub rock band sounding a little like mid 60s mod era who but also meshed in the punk explosion of 77, anyway live the pirates where an amazing band, mick and crew could easily take on bigger acts like dr feelgood or give the damned, sex pistols or the buzzcocks a run for there money, the pirates played live with a lot of power and a lot of energy, you can almost smell the sweat running down the walls playing these two discs, these where awsome days for rock n roll, when mick put this incarnation of the pirates back together they where more powerful and in your face then they had been in the early 60s with johnny kidd, the pirates gigged a lot from 76 to around 82 and then split again for good but did continue to do the occasional reunion gigs about every 2 years or every year, they even went to japan in the late 1990s for some shows, i had always wished they came here to new york to do a gig at the ritz or someplace like that but it never happened, a lot of people dont know this but i knew a friend of mick green and he had told me that jimmy page hung out with mick a lot in the early 60s when jimmy was a session player and took a lot from him i belive this guy becouse he grew up with mick and showed me photos it was to bad page never really spoke of mick after HE rose to fame around 1968/69, regardless mick was one of the most underated guitarists out of the british invasion era, if you ask anyone who is still around from that time and was on that scene they sure will have a story about MICK GREEN, anyway mick i thought made an awsome comeback with the pirates in the mid 70s and i wish they had continued on well into the 80s fulltime but sadley that was not to be, if you are a fan already i know you will be getting this if you have not already, if you are not check these guys out on the net and im sure you will buy this cd in a minute, this is classic pirates live!!!!!!!!!!!!!! rip mick you are missed by REAL rockers like myself.................... you where one of a kind
