4.0 out of 5 stars The luminous Ms Kendal 22 Dec 2010
Format:DVD
The 1965 film which began the Merchant/Ivory saga, and which kick-started the career of Felicity Kendal. She co-stars with most of her family in a tale of itinerant players trying to keep the rumour of Shakespeare alive in a post-colonial India which was in the throes of taking the all-singing, all-dancing Bollywood blockbuster to its bosom. The photography is in shimmering monochrome, the pace is leisurely, but Ms Kendal blows everyone else away. Madhur Jaffrey is appropriately vain, glamorous and self-serving as a newly-famous musical film star, and the whole film is shot through with a sense of regret for the loss of old certainties. Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare Wallah DVD 13 Mar 2012
Format:DVD
This is a reasonable copy of the original film but has not been enhanced. The sound is really not very good. However, it is a classic and therefore of great interest to movie buffs. It does contain cast interviews and interviews with James Ivory, Ismail Merchant and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. A great film of its day.

3.0 out of 5 stars Less than I was expecting 24 Jan 2010
Format:DVD
I'd heard about Shakespeare Wallah for years and after getting the wonderful new DVD of Room with a View, thought I ought to see how it all started. What a disappointment. Even making allowances for its age, the plot seems leaden and the acting little better. I'm amazed this is the film that "made" Felicity Kendal, before she became famous with The Good Life.

The one surprise, for me at any rate, is the superb performance of Madhur Jaffrey, who I only knew through her Indian recipe books. When she's not in shot, the film drags a bit.
