The Shakespeare Stories book set is a brilliant introduction for young (8 - 11 yrs) children to the Shakespeare plays. By reading the two page resume at the back first, you get a good idea of the plot. Then the wonderful illustrations by Tony Ross introduce you to the characters. The stories are just long enough/short enough for a bedtime read. If the play is to be studied then a fuller version of the story will be needed.

Brilliant adaptation of the stories keeping the characterisation, plot, humour, tragedy etc pitched at just the right level for a 7 yo to be captivated. The author/adapter is obviously working from some good source material but has got it spot on. I'd tried a few other classics for children (Jules Verne, HG Wells, Dickens etc) but they became tedious and 'lost in translation'.
As a taster for the full works or to give young children some wider 'themes' to interest them I can't fault it.

I purchased this as a gift for my daughter, my decision to purchase this collection was swayed by the fact that romeo&juliet and macbeth was in the collection. When i opened my parcel i was annoyed to discover that out of the twelve books that was advertised for of them was not in the collection instead of getting romeo&juliet, macbeth, hamlet and a midsummers nights dream i got julius ceaser, the taming of the shrew, king lear and the merchant of venice, also its clearly advertised as a box set yet they arrived individual.

Having purchased one of the books in Scotland, I felt that these were written really well. I teach adults with learning difficulties and they would not understand Shakespeare. However, these books will enable them to study Shakespeare's work in a simplified form. This will be a good resource for me.
