features: Much Ado About Nothing, Julius Caesar, Antony & Cleopatra, Measure For Measure, As You Like It, Cymbeline, Richard III, Comedy of Errors and Winter's Tale.
As in the first volume, Garfield introduces the younger reader to Shakespeare by a skilful weaving of phrases from the original into his re-telling. And the illustrations, particularly the colour plates, really bring the whole thing to life

Garfield's second volume of Shakespeare comprises - "Much Ado About Nothing", "Julius Caesar", "Antony & Cleopatra", "Measure For Measure", "As You Like It", "Cymbeline", "Richard III", "Comedy of Errors" and "A Winter's Tale".There are many prose versions of Shakespeare's plays, some good, others not. Garfield is a storyteller himself, a novelist of note and it shows in these stories. Written for young people, he pares the plays to their basics and tells the stories well and, in some cases, that is not as simple as it sounds.

Volume One has the more well-known plays; this volume contains a mixture of better and less well-known plays and it is an excellent, well-produced new edition of Shakespeare plays in prose - all told by a prose writer.

My son is 9 yars old and has been studying Shakespeare for Social Studies. He went to see a kids production of Macbeth and became hooked. He loves this and the Shakespeare Stories 1 . Would recommend for secondary school age too.

Having bought both books by Leon Garfield, I am delighted with them. Shakespeare's plays have been beautifully translated into relatively concise stories which gives the reader a good understanding of what each of the plots/storylines are about. From a children's or teaching point of view, really useful for giving an overview before delving into the nitty-gritty of the language and detail. My two books have had a lot of use in lots of different areas and I would recommend them to anyone who would like to have a reasonable idea of what all the plays are about, especially if going to see a stage production and wishing to know the outline to better understand what you see. The way the stories are written do not spoil or give any preconceptions prior to seeing a live production or indeed reading the entire play.
