Reviews

Renowned author and Shakespearian scholar Leon Garfield adapts two of the playwright's works into modern day animations. The adaptations use a variety of animation techniques and feature the vocal talents of Peter Postlethwaite, Bernard Hill and Abigail McKern. 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' is a fantastical tale set in an enchanted forest featuring four young lovers, a troupe of hack actors, a donkey-headed boy and a pesky hobgoblin who applies unusual potions and punishments rather liberally. 'Richard III' is Shakespeare's tale of the unsightly hunchbacked king (voiced by Antony Sher) and the dastardly goings on at his royal court.

A great way to introduce the Bard to kids, teenagers, and adults. The series is beautifully crafted, using different kinds of animation techniques. My students loved the Midsummer Night's Dream - we went on to compare it with the book and other movies, analysing how the producer went about choosing which scenes to include and which to leave out. Then my students wanted to make their own film version, and we've never had more fun in the classroom. Enjoy!

This is a good teaching resource for older pupils (aged 15+) or for very well-educated younger children. The language is the same as the plays. Animation seems dated - pupils need to have good concentration skills to appreciate this collection.

One of the best of this animated Shakespeare series, making a good introduction to the play for a bright child.
