*** THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE "MFSL" 2010 AUDIOPHILE CD REISSUE ***

By the time "Shake It Up" appeared in November 1981, THE CARS had produced a stunning self-titled debut album in 1978 but followed it with two albums "Candy-O" (1979) and "Panorama" (1980) which left some fans feeling cold and cheated. "Shake It Up" restored some of that original faith (it peaked at Number 9 in the USA). I bought it on holiday in New York at the time and have played the thing to buggery ever since.

Which brings us to this expensive and exclusive MFSL Original Master Recording issue. Released late January 2010 in the USA on Mobile Fidelity UDCD 788 (40:53 minutes) - it features mini-LP repro artwork (a hard-card gatefold sleeve) and is a limited numbered edition (numbered in gold lettering on the rear). It's been mastered from the 1st generation mastertapes by ROB LoVERDE at Mobile Fidelity's Sound Labs in Sebastopol in California using their patented GAIN 2 SYSTEM. The disc is a GOLD ULTRADISC II CD - itself housed in a gauze inner sleeve for protection. This is then cleverly wrapped in a black and gold gatefold card-protector (the wording on both sides explain MFSL's remastering process and the company's 30-year history in Audiophile Pressings). Beside that is an 8-page booklet - which essentially mimics the inner lyric bag of the original Elektra Records LP.

Cars fans will know that only 4 of its 9 tracks have been remastered before - "Shake It Up", "Since You're Gone", "I'm Not The One" and "Cruiser" on the 1995 "Just What I Needed" 2CD Anthology. The 5CD mini box set issued by Rhino in 2010 didn't carry a remaster either - this is first time the entire album has been given a sonic overhaul and it sounds fantastic.

After the relatively dissapointing 'Panorama' album, 'Shake It Up' somewhat restored fans belief in the band. Though not quite up to the standard of their debut or 'Candy O', this album contains it's own bona-fide Cars classics in the shape of the all too short 'Since You're Gone' and the massive U.S hit title track. Also great are 'I'm Not The One', 'Victim Of Love' and 'This Could Be Love'. As for the rest of the set, 'A Dream Away' takes a few listens but grows on you, 'Think It Over' is typical Cars but not quite their best and 'Maybe Baby' an average album track, still, on the whole album only the dull 'Cruiser' is a dissapointment. If you liked the first two albums you should get this, I think you'll like it!

While the thrid album Panorama disappointed many at the time ( looking back today it is worth revisiting) , this their fourth album was generally regarded as a partial at least return to form. In sound, style and production it blends better with a progression from the first two albums.

As well as the album picture covers the lyrics on Cars album more often than not focus on women and on Shake It Up the message is little more cynical. The opener Since You've Been Gone dealing with life after a failed relationship is a mid tempo track with melancholy lyrics. This Could Be Love is a dark even menacing track right from the outset with a brooding base guitar and sequencer line. The narrator was and probably still is a sexual predator who requires his latest partner to say that it could be love. A Dream Away predates a sound/vocal delivery later imitated by INXS. The album closes with two of my favourite Cars tracks. Think It Over is up tempo power pop with the chorus line "think it over" sung in harmony by the backing vocalists. This track cross fades into Maybe Baby - some of the lyrics in the verses are oblique which adds to the mystery about the woman who you can fall for but who will always remain an unobtainable dream. Haven't we all been there?.
