3.0 out of 5 stars Karmic journey for 2 musician egotists, 13 Jan 2009
By Lyn "musicolit" (Melbourne Australia) - See all my reviews
This is about a successful star (Bobby Deol) in the US music industry who writes popular music. Music is is whole life. He's a nice guy and has a 'guru-ji' (I presume a guru/teacher) he talks to and shares his inner world.
Then along comes a competitor (Upen Patel) who doesn't like the stars music to the point of contempt. This guy is completely arrogant and a jerk. However he apparently writes superior music naturally and well.
Then a Mozart theme develops. We have a Salieri (Deols character)whose life is music potentially upstaged by a someone who doesn't seem to deserve his gift or dedicate himself to it (Patels character). The music just pours out of him and is written note-perfect from the beginning from his head.
From this point our nice guy goes to the dark side twisted by his envy and ego. His 'guru-ji' doesn't seem to have much input. Deol's character's response to potentially losing out is the major part of the movie.
We then have 2 egoists and a revenge plot- but will they see the light or get their 'come-uppence"...?
Now Bobby Deol is quite good - and stands out. He looks every inch a music star with his shoulder length curly hair and cute looks (though a slightly ageing one!) He also has a good range of expression and nuance. Patel's 'Father', the always excellent Anupam Kher has a small part which is a stand out too.
There is some quite catchy music in it that I took away with me (though there isn't much difference between the star's music and the supposedly superior upstart's. The music also was a bit of a strong point if you like some catchy stuff - not necessarily with great lyrics in translation.
None of the stars are strong in the dance department and they sort of cover with fast changes of camera angle. The backing dancers were a bit too Western for me (I like the large Indian groups better) and didn't do enough to divert.
The plot overall is interesting, if a bit bleak and negative and the movie had potential. It isn't a romance movie nor is it violent but it isn't light and frothy. It is about the darker side of human nature and a sub theme of the fates and what happens if you stand in ego and try to tread over others and write your own fate.
The biggest problem for me was the other casting. I just didn't relate to Patel or the main woman (?Kangana Ranaut). Patel's character is a one-dimensional jerk for me. A
Apparently Patel started as a male model and is apparently known globally in the world of fashion. He has modeled for brands such as Hugo Boss, Paul Smith and Zegna. I actually didn't find him that attractive with the perpetually stuck our dimpled bearded chin and pout. We had the 'shirt off wander over the biceps and abs' moment. He had a one day beard growth that maybe was meant to be cool but made him look like a thug in the context of the egoist. His eyes' expression didn't change between a range of supposed moods. Perhaps he was a bit out of his depth but he didn't click for me.
At least Deol's character had dimension and you kept hoping he'd get his nice side back again and be redeemed (no spoiler on what happens).
The girlfriend (Kangana Ranaut) didn't seem that charismatic either - though she did try.
There could have been more of a dramatic feel to the movie given the content but it ended up looking a bit empty and almost cartoon-like -long lingers on facial expressions in close up like a cartoon frame.
I'm not writing this movie off entirely. It may not be a complete waste of your time. It didn't do good box office and has been panned a lot.
I think Bobby Deol is underrated and with a good director could burst his boundaries a bit. I find him interesting to watch and he stands head and shoulders above the others in the movie- and some of the music is catchy.
