Madelaine is content to play wife, mother and tennis until handsome Max comes to town and opens an antique shop. She falls heavily for this latest flirtation on the dinner party circuit. Set in 70s Solihull, this is one of the best reads I've had in a long time. A friend recommended it to me and I loved it. It's funny, it's witty, the love story had me hooked and there are hilarious details like the clothes and dialogue and music. It's a great summer page-turner!

This is a deeply seductive novel. It's funny and moving, the period detail is hilariously spot on and used to great comic effect and most importantly, the characters feel like old friends after just a couple of pages. I've also read The Rotters Club and enjoyed it's blokey look back at the decade that taste forgot. Shagpile is easily it's equal, but has at it's heart a wonderful love story which was much more to my taste.

Brilliant 22 July 2008
Format:Paperback
Been reading it on a week off sick, really funny but heartwarming. Its a look back at the Seventies, how the views of people were more hypocritical and how women were expected to be.
