4.0 out of 5 stars ATMOSPHERIC AND EERIE..., 1 Dec 2002
By Lawyeraau (Balmoral Castle) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
Beautifully written, the book immediately grips the reader in its
thrall. The plot is well developed, as are the main characters. There are also enought twists and turns to satisfy most. If you enjoyed Susanna Kearsley's previous novel, "Mariana", you will also enjoy this one.

The plot revolves around an archaeological site in Scotland where our heroine, archaeologist Verity Grey, is working. Toss in a former lover, an eight year old blessed with second sight, a masterful, very attractive Scotsman, a family secret, some Scottish mists, and a ghostly sentinel from the Ninth Roman Legion, and you have a recipe for a gothic style page turner, if ever there were one.

4.0 out of 5 stars If You Like Mary Stewart . . . ., 3 Aug 2001
By Diana F. Von Behren "reneofc" (Kenner, LA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Susanna Kearsley updates the damsel-in-distress story with a delightful style reminiscent of Mary Stewart's earlier works. The formula is tried and true: romance is subtle, the setting a bit exotic or out of the ordinary, the hero dependable, good-looking with an inbred sense of style and manner and the heroine plucky, self-sufficient and more than a little impulsive. Of course, the ending is predictably pleasant; the promise of long lasting romance is fulfilled and the reader comes away with a fresh experience that touches a chord within along the way and forces you to look for more of this author's books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant pass the time sort of book., 3 Jul 1999
By A Customer
A young woman archaeologist attends at a dig on the Scots borders where she finds romance and more than a touch of the supernatural. I quite enjoyed this book, although it's not a desperate need to know page turner. It's the sort of story you can leave with your granny and know that she's not going to get a shock if she reads it. The characters are well drawn although their prototypes definitely come from women's magazines and there's more than a hint of Mills & Boon about the hero with 'the thick slanting fall of black eyelashes touching his cheekbone, the firm, unyielding angle of his jaw'. The story rather apes the old Mary Stewart novels although the author is not of the same calibre as Stewart. Gentle adventure rather than woman in outright jeopardy. As I said earlier, one for you granny rather than edge of the seat. Amiable and undemanding.
