Product Description

Product Description

A Book of Hours: Shadows Walking opens on a parched Arizona landscape, where Pima County Sheriff's Deputy Rachel Navarro is about to be drawn into the strangest case of her life: A missing girl seems to have been lured to her doom by an angel. Rachel's partner turns up beheaded, the victim of a serial killer whose list of crimes has been growing for centuries. The United States Marshal who commandeers the case claims to be two thousand years old and wears the emblem of the Knights Templar. All this takes place before the Norse werewolf comes to town, before Rachel meets the star-crossed lovers whose life stories were told by Shakespeare, and before she learns she's a half-witch.

She's having kind of a bad week.

Combining a fully realized fantasy world with the breakneck pace of a modern-day thriller and a cast of eccentric characters drawn from history and legend, A Book of Hours presents an epic adventure for readers who enjoy lighthearted fantasy with a dark and quirky twist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly Creative and Hugely Sarcastic 22 May 2014

What is better than people who are thousands of years old, some of whom have magical powers, and some who happen to be thoroughly evil. Mix them together and let all their shared grudges, fights, disagreements and treachery come to the surface, and your in for a rollicking good read. Combine that with a tightly convoluted plot, and you have a great novel.

Rachel, a cop in a small town in Arizona, finds herself aided by U.S. Marshal who happens to be a Templar. The crimes keep stacking up and so do the immortals, with Rachel smack dab in the middle. The story grabs you at the beginning and let's you go with a fantastic ending, and btw, there is a lot of action, magic, humor history and violence in between.

Bottom Line: If you like history, a dry wit and a good adventure tale, with magic and other things thrown in, then this is your book. I'm off to read book two...
4.0 out of 5 stars intriguing and entertaining! 20 Feb 2014

It took a little bit of reading to really get intrigued, but soon I was whisked away into an amazing tale full of history, mythology, fantasy, powers of Light and Dark, lots of unusual characters, all set in the middle of the American Southwest. The author did plenty of research and then took all this info and crafted it into an intriguing and entertaining tale. I noticed a few typo errors plus a few errors that were either spelling or typo errors. (I do not think they were there for effect.) The errors are the only reason for the 4 star rating.

I would willingly recommend this book to those who enjoy fantasy set in modern times.

I read a lot and often struggle to find an enjoyable and original voice. This book is a chaotic, funny, tragic and uplifting gem of a story. The characters sang to me well after the story was finished. Thank you Mr Burke.
