I read this book in school and I thought it was great. The start is slightly boring but it soon becomes very exciting. There are many themes in this book: abuse, pressure, identity, parenting and friendship. The usual themes BUT here they are presented in such a way that one is gripped and really feels for the charachters. All in all this is a great book for youth and I could also imagine for adults - although I cannot judge this as I am only 16.

On one level Shadows is a tense thriller, darkly written, and full of shocking twists.Yet it is much more than that. Tim Bowler has skillfully used the pace and drama of a thriller to explore family relationships, and the need to find an identity of one's own.

Tim Bowler is one of the very few authors who consistently maintains a fantastic, gripping pace when he wants to achieve it, and SHADOWS is no exception. This compulsive desire to read his books is so rare that it needs special highlighting - his judgement of pace is exemplary.

As usual in this book his characters and believable and you really care about them. The handling of bruised teenagers searching for ways out of difficult positions is done with great sensitivity . You care passionately what will happen to them. The portrait of Jamie's father is also a wonderful one - with a surprise in its tail.

Fantastic, yet again, Tim!
