Product Description

The Glasgow Orchestra are rehearsing to perform, but little do they know of the sequence of events happening backstage. When George Millar, the orchestra's leader, is brutally murdered in his dressing room, his colleagues are shocked. But the show must go on. Enter DCI Lorimer and psychologist Solomon Brightman to investigate. What they uncover is a series of irrevocably tangled relationships between the orchestra members. Up until his death Millar had been involved in homosexual relationships with several other orchestra members and was well known for playing his lovers off against one another - but were his controversial dalliances really enough to incite cold-blooded murder? A thrilling, dark tale from one of Scotland's finest writers of human envy and intrigue.

This is the first Alex Gray I have read and I enjoyed it very much. It is a well-written, complete novel with depth of characterisation. I think the reason I particularly enjoyed it was because of the background; set mainly in & amongst an orchestra, their practice hall, their homes, their lives etc. One or two grisly moments but nothing extreme and insight into the policeman's life & work too, made it an interesting read.

Well worth a read 30 Mar 2009

I've only recently discovered Alex Gray and her Glasgow based detective Lorimer; so I'm probably reading the novels out of sequence, but no matter. Each of the books stand alone and Shadows of Sound is no exception. A well written story with Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall as the backdrop. I have to admit that I did anticipate the plot twists in advance, but this did not spoil my enjoyment of the book. The regular characters are brought to life by Gray in a likeable fashion; the reader is encouraged to care about the personal lives of the team. Will Lorimer's wife come back? Will the pathologist-phsycologist couple stay together?
