Product Description

Product Description

Praise for Shadows in the Night... "Finnis' lively debut...is timely as conquerors seek to impose civilization on a barbarian culture that doesn't appreciate the new roads and government or the increase in commerce." -Publishers Weekly Roman Britain in 91 AD is a raw frontier province, part of the mighty Empire ruled by Domitian Caesar. Though it is almost fifty years since the legions invaded, many native tribes still hate their conquerors and seize any chance to harass the Roman settlers who are flocking in to colonize the new province. Tension is especially high in the north, where Aurelia Marcella, a young innkeeper from Italy, runs the Oak Tree Inn on the road to York. A string of savage murders disrupts her peaceful life, and she and her Roman friends find themselves under attack from a secret native war-band whose aim is to drive all Romans out. When a traveler, Quintus, is nearly killed close to the inn, he and Aurelia must track down the rebel warriors and identify their mysterious masked leader, the Shadow of Death. Can they find and destroy him before his campaign of terror turns into open rebellion? Jane Finnis has been fascinated by the past ever since as a child she walked the straight Roman roads of East Yorkshire, where she lives with her husband Richard. She spends much of her time researching and writing about the Roman Empire. www.janefinnis.com

When in September I saw that Jane Finnis's web site stated she had only one new book out in December 2011 but that there were two new books listed on Amazon I emailed her contact address and Jane kindly responded within 4 hrs.

Jane said:-
"SHADOWS IN THE NIGHT ... isn't a new book - just an existing book (GET OUT OR DIE) being re-released in December with a new title. Why the name change? My publishers wanted it. They've never been 100% in favour of the original title" ... "and I'm happy with the change, except where it may confuse people...the last thing I want is for anyone to be misled into buying a book they think is new, when it isn't! On the other hand of course I want *everyone* to rush out and buy DANGER IN THE WIND...well I would, wouldn't I? <g>"

Jane updated her site in September 2011 to explain about SHADOWS IN THE NIGHT.

Jane said that all three existing Aurelia Marcella mysteries are being re-issued with new covers, "but thank goodness only one is changing its title"

When this happened in September 2011 there was no other Amazon mechanism available except the Product Discussion Forum to warn potential readers that this was a re-issue with a name change. I used the "update product info" to contact Amazon but they rejected the advice to add a warning in the product description. Slate Amazon - not the author or the book.

Beware! 18 Nov 2011

The text of Shadows in the Night is identical to Get Out or Die--copyright 2005. This is a good book but I don't need to own two copies of the same book with different titles.

Inane plot lines 29 Feb 2012
By dainisjg - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I like historic mysteries or novels that give me a feeling of the times in which they take place. This novel, placed in Roman Britannia circa 97 AD, does not do that. The dialogue is current vernacular or slang - "I say, who's this?" "...make sure nobody was trying to pinch our horses." "Tie 'em up." (More authentic sounding would be "Bind them well.") The main character, Aurelia, asks her slaves to do things, "Give me a hand to get him inside, will you?" rather than to tell them. But, that is in keeping with her persona of a 21st century liberated woman in 1st century Roman Britannia. ("In case you hadn't noticed, I'm not some mincing lady of fashion who has to go everywhere on wheels.")

The plot involves a mysterious masked "Shadow of Death" and his "shadow-men" who are determined to kill and drive the Roman citizens out of Britannia. This seems somewhat reminiscent of 1930s Saturday afternoon movie serials. Trying to find out who these shadow-men are is a bit daunting. When five men show up in Aurelia's mansio (tavern) in military garb and one starts to brag about how he is a shadow-man and is going to kill all the Romans, Aurelia has him thrown out. One certainly can't have disturbances of that sort when one is trying to figure out who the shadow men are, can one? Most other plot factors are just as unbelievable.

Beware! 22 Nov 2011

I should have read the publisher's review before I bought this title. This is a repackaging of the first title in the series, Get out or Die. I do not understand why it was thought necessary to do this, unless it was to trick readers into buying it twice. Shame on you!
