Katriona Gilmore (Tiny Tin Lady) and Jamie Roberts (Kerfuffle) combine fiery fiddle with percussive guitar to produce blazing instrumentals and heart-wrenching songs Katriona Gilmore and Jamie Roberts have been performing together on the folk scene since 2006, while studying together at Leeds College of Music. Their self-penned material ranges from blazing instrumentals to songs which have been described as ‘heart-wrenching’, spanning all manner of subjects, to contemporary arrangements of traditional songs. Jamie’s dextrous percussive and lap-style guitar work is a visual as well as a sonic delight, while Katriona’s intricate fiddle playing shifts seamlessly from sensitive to fiery and back again in the blink of an eye. Their unique sound has been recognised with several accolades including Bright Young Things 2007 and New Roots 2007 and they have supported, among others, Swarb’s Lazarus, Jez Lowe, Nancy Kerr & James Fagan and Van Eyken, at festivals, clubs and theatres. ‘Shadows & Half Light’, the duo’s first full length recording, makes the most of Katriona and Jamie’s multi-instrumental skills – mandolin, banjo, cajon and even trombone can be heard alongside the usual fiddle and guitar, as well as guest vocals and piano from Jamie’s sister Kathryn Roberts. With the release of their long-awaited first album, Katriona and Jamie are touring more extensively than ever before and enthralling audiences across the country. Format:Audio CD
Well, I bought this after watching a couple of their live videos on Youtube and all I can say is WOW! Whilst some of the lyrics inevitably betray their youthfulness the musicianship and playing are IMMENSE, with Katriona and Jamie both being absolute masters of their instruments. My favourite tracks are Hunter Man, Middle of May and All Among The Barley. Katriona's fiddle playing on Middle of May is breathtaking and you'll wonder why anyone has ever got excited about Seth Lakeman. Of course there are some slower songs but they provide a perfect contrast to the others.
And if all that isn't enough, the album is self produced by Katriona and Jamie and sounds fantastic. No surprise then that Jamie's sister is Kathryn Roberts, the former lead singer of Equation and now married to Seth Lakeman's brother Sean.
So, all in all a brilliant contemporary fresh exciting folk album. Now I must catch them live!

Some great songs all taken from their live show.
Standouts include Hunterman - White Lie - I don't want to say Goodbye and the poignant Travelling in Time.
Some blazing Instrumentals in tricky time signatures,display their instrumental talents to the full.Brilliant !

Was lucky enough to catch Katriona and Jamie playing live at The Minstrel Room in Cowbridge and have played this and their more recent CD Up from the Deep constantly since. Cannot recommend this duo highly enough. Both are superb song writers and there is great variety in their material whilst also having a very solid and distinctive sound. Buy the CDs but see them live to fully apprecaite what a full, interesting and exciting sound Katriona and Jamie can make.
