'Compelling.' INDEPENDENT 'Woodruff writes vividly' THE TIMES 'Woodruff evokes the passion and turbulence of their experience in phenomenally physical detail.' DAILY EXPRESS

Product Description

Woodruff's novel is about the fortunes of an Oxford University rowing eight, leading up to and during the Second World War. 1938: the Arnold College crew are a varied bunch, united only by the love of their sport and a sense that theirs is a generation which may have to fight for king and country. There's Charley Bradbury, a Scottish Communist and pacifist; David Evans, a chorister and super-boffin; Roger Blundell a witty dandy;Tony Markham, heir to a substantial estate and brother to four Mitford-type sisters; Pat Riley, charming somewhat mysterious Irishman; Alex Haverfield, handsome and a natural leader; Max Elsfield a dangerous self-destructive drinker and Bill Clark a naval cadet. As the war progresses they are gradually whittled away. Some, like Max Elsfield and David Evans, have been unhappy in love and have brought about their own destruction through reckless assaults on the enemy. Others like Charley Bradbury have had the bad luck to be in the wrong place at the wrong time - torpedoed on a passenger vessel from Russia. Ultimately this - like the Nab End stories - is a book about common humanity: the importance of virtues such as faith, loyalty and self-sacrifice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece! Superb!, 10 Dec 2003
Noble character, honor, dignity, pride.
This masterpiece is an inspiration, and a tragedy. These friends start out in college, full of life, love, laughter and promise. Theirs is an exuberant world of scholarship, rowing, pranks, mountain climbing, and peace. Then WWII starts and everything changes. They all go to fight. The story weaves their individual war time experiences with their ongoing friendships and their lives at home, their women and their children. The work is gripping, I felt this big bloody monster called WAR destroying everything. Yet each man acts with such courage. They gave their best.
I wish the presidents and prime ministers of the world could read this book, and feel for people as this book makes us feel for humanity.
A modern day War and Peace, but shorter and much more readable. I highly recommend it.
Inspirational too, because these men had great lives, and yet went to war to give us peace. Let's live in a way to honor the sacrifices they made.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book to bring back memories, 26 Jan 2004
By Heather (Maidstone, England) - See all my reviews
I read Shadows of Glory with great interest. It is a gripping story starkly real; I could not put the book down. Though saddened by the loss of so many lives, this book gives a much needed insight into the bravery, suffering and the sacrifices experienced by our forces during World War II: which most of us now cannot even imagine. This is a beautifully and sensitively written work, and I personally thank the author for writing it.

3.0 out of 5 stars dragged a little, 21 Jun 2004
i found this book quite interesting, and i found out a lot about the second world war, but i found the story itself quite boring and also quite confusing at times with so many characters to concentrate on.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tedious
Nope, don't buy it. I've read a lot of dross in my time, but I couldn't make it past the first 50 pages on either occasion I began this book. Read more
