Shadows Fall is a book that tries to touch the edges of magic, and occasionally succeeds. It is the town where forgotten legends and faded heroes go to remember their past excesses and successes, and finally go through the Forever Door.
Watched over by Father Time, the town has existed for several centuries, and remembers most of them in its different streets. Unfortunately it has attracted the attention of William Royce, a sad and lonely child who grew into a sad and lonely man. It just so happens that he made a deal with a demon and managed to take control of an extremist religious group and a lot of weapons along the way. And he wants control of the Forever Door. On top of that, there is an unknown psychopathic killer on the loose.. oh and by the way, Time has entered his death and rebirth cycle prematurely. If that wasn't enough, James Hart has come back and started to scare everyone who remembered that his birth was marked by a prophecy saying that he would be mixed up in the town's destruction.
There are many characters who will be familiar to readers of some of Green's later books, and part of the fun of Shadows Fall is trying to identify some of his forgotten legends. On the downside, he does include the talking animals that may be familiar to Deathstalker readers from Haceldama, but on the upside he does rescue the fairies from the Victorian bookshelf and give them back their amorality and their aggression. The book has flaws, but it is a unique story about a place you'll end up wishing really existed. It blends the action of Deathstalker with the fantasy of the Forest Kingdom books, and in places touches the humour of Haven. The blend of real world and fantasy will be welcome to those who enjoyed Drinking Midnight Wine, but all Green fans should try it. So should those who haven't yet tried Simon Green, and are looking for an engrossing read to introduce them. Try it, for those times when it does reach the edges of the magic.
