Product Description

(Originally published as TORPEDO)

For fans of Tom Clancy, Stephen Coonts, Joe Buff, and Dale Brown...

OUT GUNNED... OUT MANEUVERED... OUT THOUGHT... THE ONLY WAY TO SURVIVE IS TO CHANGE THE RULES.

A minor accident at a German nuclear power plant, a Biological Warfare attack on the British Embassy in Washington, DC, and a secret arms deal combine to drive a trusted NATO Ally into an illegal alliance with a rogue Middle Eastern state. With the world hovering on the brink of war, a handful of U.S. Navy warships must track down and destroy a wolfpack of state-of-the-art submarines.

Their enemy is skilled in deception, and incredibly lethal. Out-gunned, out-maneuvered, and out-thought, the U.S. Navy crews must throw the rulebook out the window, and become every bit as devious and deadly as their enemy.

If they fail, the consequences are unthinkable...

"A timeless warrior epic. Jeff Edwards spins a stunning and irresistibly-believable tale of savage modern naval combat." -- JOE BUFF, Bestselling author of 'SEAS OF CRISIS,' and 'CRUSH DEPTH'

"Edwards wields politics and naval combat tactics with a skill equal to the acknowledged masters of military fiction." -- THE MILITARY PRESS

"... as close as you can get to naval surface combat without being shot at. Jeff Edwards has penned a fast, no-holds-barred thriller that never lets up. Highly recommended." -- JACK DuBRUL, Bestselling author of 'THE SILENT SEA,' and 'HAVOC'

Synopsis

An accident at a German nuclear plant, an illegal arms deal, and a biological warfare attack on the British Embassy in Washington, DC, combine to ignite an international crisis that threatens to draw Western Europe, the Middle East, and the United States into all-out war. To prevent it, a handful of U.S. Navy destroyers and frigates must track down and destroy a wolfpack of state-of-the-art submarines. The enemy is a NATO Ally: trained in U.S. naval warfare tactics, skilled in deception, and thoroughly lethal. Out-gunned, out-maneuvered, and out-thought, the crews of the U.S. Navy ships discover that the only way to survive is to change the rules. "An incredible novel! Highly accurate, tautly paced, and disturbingly prescient, Torpedo takes a hard look at a real naval threat that has been given too little consideration." --Tom Mays, Nautical Engineer and author of The Falling Sky "Jeff Edwards writes with a high-voltage pen. This right-off-the-headlines sea story crackles and pops in a continual shower of sparks! Great climax; great read!" --Don Gerrard, editor and former publisher, Random House-Bookworks books "This is the book that Surface Warriors have been waiting for."

--Vincent Fenty, Chief Petty Officer, United States Navy (Retired)

I bought this book on the basis of what the 2 previous reviewers thought, and was not disappointed in the the least. A fast paced and well written book with some techno stuff which was thankfully in small doses (no need to skip pages of endless techno jargon). The characters are well thought out and portrayed and the storyline is totally believable. I am looking forward to his next book and award 5* with no hesitation at all.

I loved the subject matter of this book. The technical side was great, very exciting to read. But....and for me it was a big but, the background story line, the reason for all this exciting action was just too unbelievable, the reaction of Britain and the rest of the world too immplausible. I would have prefered a ficticious country background to this, at least then it would not have detracted from the action.
Buy this book for the action alone and it will not disapoint, but do not buy for a good story.

great technothriller 24 April 2006
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
what a great technothriller. lots of action, neverending action, and plenty of weapon details. characters are believeable too. my one bitch is that british naval officers do not say "all ahead flank! or full left rudder. for a techno thriller written by an ex us navy man this is quite a failing but i suppose its written for an american reader who is probably easily confused. this book makes a great change from submarine thrillers and tells the story from the "other side" as it were. well worth a read.
