I only recently discovered the writings of Karen Campbell when I read and thoroughly enjoyed her first novel
The Twilight Time. Unfortunately, the second book in the series,
After the Fire doesn't seem to currently be available in Kindle format, so I skipped on to Shadowplay.
In this story Anna Cameron is now approaching forty. Her promotion from a Sergeant with Strathclyde Police to Chief Inspector in the force means she's transferred to a more affluent division in Glasgow.
Anna was looking forward to working with her new boss hoping for a bit of female solidarity. However, Commander Marion Hamilton - or JC as colleagues call her behind her back - is a bully and intimidates Anna at every opportunity.
Crime continues apace in Glasgow - elderly Cassie Maguire has gone missing from a nursing home; Sabir Aziz has been murdered in what appears to be a racist gang related incident; counterfeit money is circulating; an enthusiastic young constable is assaulted and to cap it all, Anna's mother, who lives with her toy boy in Spain, is taken seriously ill.
Karen Campbell's vividly descriptive writing style brings everything to life and produces an authentic, very plausible, story.
A very enjoyable, well written and entertaining story that is certainly worth reading.
