Product Description

Product Description

A Lord of the Rings for the 21st century. Only a lot shorter. And funnier. And completely different. Conor thought he was an average teenager. OK, so his father only had one hand, spoke to him in ancient languages and was a bit on the eccentric side but, other than that, life was fairly normal. Until, that is, two Celtic warriors on horseback and wearing full armour appear at his front door and try to kill him. After that, things get pretty weird. Shadowmagic is a fantasy adventure for young adults of all ages from 12 to 112. Written by one of the most popular magicians in the country it brings a fresh approach to the genre and will have a broad appeal beyond the fantasy sections.

About the Author

John Lenahan is a popular TV magician who became the first person in 85 years to be expelled from the Magic Circle. He has had a prime time BBC1 TV show called Secrets Of Magic and also a BBC2 series Stuff The White Rabbit. He was the voice of the toaster in Red Dwarf and has made guest appearances on numerous variety shows. He has toured with Jack Dee, Lenny Henry and Victoria Wood. Shadowmagic was an award-winning podcast novel prior to being signed to The Friday Project.

3.0 out of 5 stars Like a chocolate mouse - tasty enough but insubstantial, 5 Oct 2009
By M. Flynn (London) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Shadowmagic (Paperback)
Firstly I need to say that this is an enjoyable book and I imagine kids of 10+ will enjoy it too. It entertained me for the day I read it but I did end up wanting more. The Land the author has created sounds great but I wanted to know more about it. I may not require all the detail the Lord of the Rings contains but I did feel this book could have provided more depth. The Land itself plays an important part in the book but as a character feels very thin. I mention Lord of the Rings because the publishers refer to it on the cover - but it is much more like the Narnia books - with a 'normal' kid finding himself in a magical world. Fortunately it is free of the religious allegory of the Narnia titles.

The plot is what you might expect given the words 'quest' and 'magic' but I was frequently frustrated by the Dick Bartonesque "with a bound he was free.." type escapes - though perhaps that should be Mr Ben escapes because there was quite a lot of "As if by magic.." driving the plot.

Still as a light bit of fun, with some good (and some terrible) jokes I did want more so it certainly appealed on one level. I hear rumour of a sequel and would be happy to read that too. Perhaps that will fill in some gaps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shadowmagic, 2 Oct 2008

Shadowmagic is Holden Caufield from Catcher in the Rye in Tir Na Nog.
Fast paced - great cliffhangers - kids love it. Great to see such good work from a new author

5.0 out of 5 stars A treat of Literary Tricks, 17 Aug 2009
By Clive Oxford (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Shadowmagic (Paperback)
John Lenahan is literally a brilliant magician, and in this his first novel he shows himself to be as brilliant a literary magician. He creates an enveloping illusion which transports us to a magical land where we witness the moral and ethical struggles so familiar to us here. His wit and inexhaustible ability to keep us guessing - how is he going to get through this one?! - makes this novel so difficult to put down, and when you finally do you will have a taste for more of his magic. He surely has a few more literary tricks up his sleeve for us.
