Although not a particular fan of country music, I bought this album on its original release after reading the rapturous praise it received from critics at the time - and by gosh, they weren't wrong! Almost 20 years later it still sounds like one of the greatest albums I've ever heard.
'Shadowland' is one of those rare albums where, whether by luck or judgement, every element is just so right. For a start each one of the 12 songs is exquisite, it's impossible to single any one out as weaker than the rest. Add on the magnificent production - sparse, haunting and perfect for these songs - and you have a recipe for success. But what ultimately makes 'Shadowland' so special is Lang's astonishing vocals. Her glorious, warm, rich and soaring voice can be caressing or torn apart with anguish. There are more 'goosebump' moments here than you can shake a stick at - just try the "It's driving me crazy" line at the end of 'Black Coffee' or 'Busy Being Blue' in its entirety for starters.
Forget the 'country' tag, this gem of an album is a must for anyone regardless of their musical tastes.
